and another newbie's first shave :-D
today I received my Joseph Elliot 5/8.
(I was a bit affraid to use my dovo BL... simply for stropping reasons)
I felt confident to do my very first straight razorshave.
I must say, I had my Fusion nearby...
'cause the beginners advise is: "first do the side burns to the jaw line, then do the rest with your usual razor."
But after a few strokes the fun was already over... I didn't wanted to stop with the straight!
I did something naughty... I tried to shave the complete facial area!
and it was a very pleasant experience... no cuts or nics at all!!
( I must admit...I was a lil' bit proud )
from now on I say: Straight razors?! it ain't rocket science!!Last edited by PlyPals; 11-13-2010 at 03:06 AM.

Its not rocket science, but there is an art to it. The more you shave, the more you realize there are more ways to improve.
And then there is honing...

it sure is an art!
And I can't say I made a bad choice stepping up into straight razors!
However, honing... that is something for a a whole lot later!!
First finding my way in stropping...
cheers 'n greetz!

Only bad part is when you send your razor in to be Honed and you can't shave with it. Been without mine for a week and I feel like I am having separation/straight anxiety

Glad to hear that your first shave went well.
As for straight razor separation anxiety...The easiest cure for that is to purchase a second razor or third and hold them in reserve. You'll never be without a straight."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

The usual advice we give is for the average Joe. of course some just seem to adapt really fast, almost instantly. If that's you then of course be more adventurous. Just don't do more than you feel comfortable doing.

Good for you, Pals-Just remember, "Familiarity breeds contempt," especially with a str8. The 1st time I got a little ****y and started daydreaming during a shave, I got my first good cut!
There are many roads to sharp.

Big 'Grats!
Heck. This is boring. No tales of gore, torment, stitches
Way to go, PlyPal. You're off & running. 'Wish my first shaves were that bloodless! There's a reason I'm Pinklather.
