Unexpected Discovery
Likely I'm the last one on my block to discover this, but I've been doing 3 passes when I had time, the usual. This morning, I just did WTG and then ATG, skipping the XTG. Fortunately, my face and beard tolerate ATG very well, in fact that's what drew me to straights in the first place. The only way I can get really smooth shaves is ATG, and the multi-blade razors were killing me with bumps and burn. The results of doing WTB/ATG only were just as good as if I'd done all three passes, with a significant savings in time.
Anyone else stumble onto this?

I've tried, but I got lots of pulling. A quick XTG makes a huge difference for me, and when I'm going to smoothness (as opposed to quick shave for work) I don't care if it takes longer.

I can't to ATG regardless of doing XTG first or not.. every time I go ATG I feel the burn and my wife asks me if I decided to use Sandpaper on my face.

I've actually found the same thing. I'm still learning, and do still get a bit of burn, but I've found that even though I have an especially thick beard, I can go straight to ATG for my second pass without it being any worse than usual. I still do an XTG pass if I'm not in a rush, because it's all so swirly that I only get a really smooth finish with all three, but that's more a function of hitting all the little nooks and crannies from a few angles. For the straightforward areas like cheeks and sideburns, WTG-->ATG works just fine for me too.

I usually do WTG and ATG as well. That usually works well for me. I get a really close shaves with no irritation.

Thanked: 50I'm only shaving a month or so, I noticed that ATG is more comfortable after WTG and XTG, but ATG after WTG is possible.
But truth be told, ATG with a straight is a million times better than any multibladed razor. I barely have bumps of redness since shaving this way.

Yep, this is pretty much what I've started doing, except I still have to do XTG on my chin becasue I've got a patch of whiskers on each side that grows at a weird angle--if I just go WTG then ATG, then those patches are still scruffy. But I gave up XTG on most of the face about 2 weeks ago, and you're right--just as great a shave in less time!

Lawson - I'm right there with you. I just naturally evolved into a WTG then ATG shaver. On a very few occasions, like the day after an especially close shave, I'll do just a ATG shave and be done with it.

For me, the XTG pass is the one that removes the most hair. If I'm in a hurry, I skip WTG, and just do a XTG and ATG; if I skip the XTG I'm still so scruffy that I feel like I'm still shaving with the Schmuck 3.

Thanked: 13245I pretty much am right there with you Lawson I do a WTG first then I do a Multi-directional pass basically I go the direction which gets me the best results on that spot on my face paying no attention to the normal directions...
Then a clear water very light touch up pass and I am done...
My goal is always Comfort first and Closeness second...
