It's taken almost 3 months...
but I've finally gotten a really good shave. It's BBS WTG, so I didn't take it right down, but the entire shave was extremely smooth, left absolutely no irritation and was just great in all aspects...and I have Quinton (RazorTalkin) to thank for it. I knew my primary razor was dulling down from when I first got it, but I didn't realize just how far it was gone until I tried the GoldEdge I received in the mail yesterday from Quinton. When I first started, my razor was shave ready, but I wasn't. Now I'm beginning to get the hang of things but my razor was starting to dull.
I'm going to spend some time on the hones today and try to get an edge as close to the one on the GoldEdge as I can. I'm not holding my breathe, as I'm lacking the experience to just make it happen, but at least now I know exactly what I'm looking for in my edge now.

Thanked: 20Three months!
It took me two years to finally get a proper shave. It was not my shaving technique, it was my honing. I keep blaming my shaving skills, I should have been paying attention to my honing skills. Juan.

I think that is why getting a shave ready razor to start with makes such a difference. I think it is easily the best advice I've ever gotten on the forums.

+1 on Laney and Quinton. I've bought two from Quinton, and he ships them really shave ready. I emailed him after the first purchase and asked him to share exactly what he did to get them so fine, and what he described was not anything different from what we read all over SRP about good, basic, honing procedure. I guess a lot of it is just having experience and the right touch. The razors I hone for myself have gotten to the "serviceable & comfortable-enough" stage, but they're a long way from the edges he the HAD guys around here achieve. So much to learn... but what a great way to spend time.

When I started I tried to wing it myself, coming from sharpening kitchen knives I figured I could do it. I was able to get a shaveable edge that wasn't to uncomfortable... But when I got one from Bill Ellis I knew I was lacking and knew that I could still raise my skills, and did in short.
It is always a great feeling to shave off your own edge, a feeling of accomplishment and all. Thats when you have to be careful cause thats when you start feeling the effects of AD's even more... For me RAD and HAD are always in the back of my mind waiting for a weak moment to spring out and grab something with-out me knowing it (or SWMBO for that matter)...
I feel this act of self sufficient shaving opens up all manor of side hobbies and skills that just keep getting better and better
Enjoy all

Thanked: 1195Right on, aeon! It's great when things start falling together in the proper places, isn't it?
Don't worry too much about touching up your razor, it's really easy to do. Just remember light pressure, even strokes, less is more - you can always go back and do a few more strokes.

Thanked: 9Straight shaving is fun, and a great skill to pick up, but i also found it quite a hard skill to learn, and the same with honing, practise both as much as you can.

Big Grats, Aeon
'Being only a few months ahead of you (in time - not necc. skills), I recognize the satisfaction from each leap forward. I'm at 6 months, and the last month seems to have produced a consistent improvement in getting the problem/touch up areas smoother. Each improvement feels great. Savor each one.
Rad seems to be subsiding, and rather than progress to HAD (yes, there's an N-asagi inbound), I'm trying to transition to SAD (skills acquisition). I don't see any acquisitions as satisfying as what I can do with my skills.
May each advancement come quickly and with great satisfaction.
