You might suggest that he try out DE (safety) razors for the time being. They still do a better job than cartridges and are less maintenance/easier than a straight.

I could be wrong, I was wrong once before, but I have a hunch that Juan may help his friend out with getting his money out of the Robert Williams custom. BTW, they don't cost $1,000 unless they are diamond studded or something.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Starting with a DE safety razor,he can learn about the stretching techniques needed for straight razor shaving. After a while going back to straight razor shaving would probably be easier.

It is too bad he gave up but he may come back. When talking to other guys about shaving, yeah I do, many squirm at the time and money investment. When I show them their cost over time to my costs over time that warms some up but the time (about 20" for a shave) and the maintenance thing still get most of them. Too bad for them. It is my time early in the morning to get myself set for the day. All the smells, textures and tools of my morning manly ritual are like yoga. During the shave there is only the shave. Everything else is blocked out (if not, the price is pain and pink lather) and when I am done I am ready for the day. Could not say that when I used cartridges and cold goo to get mediocre shaves.

Is he willing to give it to you? If not, is he willing to sell it? If not, is his house equipped with an alarm system or large dogs?

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

It's too bad he didn't stick with it, he's missing out on what his shaves could have turned into. Too bad about the wasted investment also, send the supplies my way!

I went the same route and eventually gave up. Some of the issue for me was physical and as one poster noted, it's better to start with an entry level Dovo. Ended up selling everything. However, the challenge still lingered and I tried a Feather. It actually worked better for me and I've had a better level of success than the first time around. I think that part of the reason is the shallower angle needed to shave with the Feather. I can almost lay the razor against my face to shave and this has helped overcome some of the initial problems that I had.

He was attracted to the novelty like many of us. You (he) really needs to get over the learning curve to be hooked. An impatient person will just get frustrated.

That is the difficulty. It takes a stubborn person, yet patient. I excell at the stubborn part of that!!

Advise him to just put it away for a while. Each time he comes back to it, it will get better.
That;s the route I took or am taking now. I started about a year ago then put it down for awhile and then just picked it up again with a fresher attitude. A lot of patience goes a long way. Maybe in time he can give a go again.
