Thanked: 40the more you shave the thicker it gets, the thicker it gets the more you shave???
My lovely wife is supportive but none to intrigued with my little hobby, now the other day I was having a little gripe about how sometimes when I shave (usually only do two passes btw) I can still see my hair foilcles. now I put this down to bad technique on my part but my wife countered with, 'you've started shaving every night now and the more often you shave the thicker and faster your hair grows'!
any truth to this, I'm pretty sure I've heard this before the missus mentioned.
old wives tale or what?

If that were true, I think more men would be shaving their heads!

Old wives tale, most often told to teenage boys. Truth is that frequency of shaving doesn't make the hair come in thicker, but that their facial hair is thickening as a natural part of maturing.

I think it's more to do with abrasion. When hair grows out of the skin, the tip interacts with the environment and gets softened of thinned over time. When we chop it down with a super sharp razor we are left with a flat top which looks thicker. But eventually that will grow out and be softened to a point by time. Just my observation.
Also shaving with a super sharp blade makes the grow back more consistent to the touch, IME.

This is certainly true when I started whit the str8 I had significantly less hair than now.

Thanked: 1195If your whiskers are growing back quicker after a straight shave then you aren't shaving close enough. If I perform my standard 2.5 pass shave my whiskers grow back noticeably slower than with other methods of shaving. But if I just whip off a quick straight shave, without my usual attention to detail, then yes my whiskers do grow back quickly due to a less than perfect shave.
As for the age old "shaving makes hair grow quicker and thicker" story, just an old wives tale folks.
