My still evolving routine...
I'm pretty new at this so it's still changing as I learn the lay of the land...er face...er beard...whatever. This is the latest iteration of my routine.
Hot Lather - WTG (that's N-S for me) for sideburns and cheeks on the right hand side.
N-S on the sideburns but NW to SE on the cheeks on the left hand side (that's all WTG)
WTG on the Neck and below the jawline (that's downward and diagonally from the center of the neck to the outside)
Hot Lather - XTG on the face, chin, jawline and mustache
Cold Rinse and Lather straight S-N on the neck. ATG on the mustache (I was feeling either brave, or stupid...probably both)
Water only touch-up.
I usually shave at night and have time to do it DEAD slow. Otherwise, it's a N-S pass everywhere then XTG. Not as smooth and there is a stubborn mustache whisker or two that refuse to be cut unless it's ATG (in which case I use the DE just for them). Seems to get the job done.
Happy Shaving!

1 pass for my daily routine, XTG. once i'm finished, i check with my hands where some stubble is left and clean it out in a pseudo 2nd path.
why? Because I have almost no hair on my cheeks. I could grow a mustache and a goatee, however, growing sideburns would look horribly stupid since the little hair that is there is very, very light.
I can also count the hair around my throat and neck... should be about 15-20 single hairs, hehe.
That means, in my case, 2 or 3 complete Passes translates to scraping my skin off completely hair-less areas 2 or 3 times. Not a good idea, as I have discovered.
BTW, i'm 26 years old by now and I doubt I will ever reach "full facial masculinity"... But it's OK, my girlfriend still likes me ;-)

Thanked: 1185My best shaves are 3 passes (WTG XTG ATG). Some days though I just do 2 passes N-S then S-N that seems to leave me more than presentable. So 3 passes is generally the standard but sometimes I do just 2. In either case despite the fact that I have a very heavy beard, it's usually midnight to one o'clock AM before I get 5 o'clock shadow.
The older I get, the better I was

I'm a two pass + touchup kinda guy. WTG, ATG and touch up. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have sparse growth on the cheek area, not being hirsute and all. Although I'm an old man now I only require two shaves a week (though I could stand three.)

Typical routine is WTG once, then XTG once. Fortunately my hair grows cross wise on my neck so XTG for me is a vertical swipe upwards. I only do a third pass if I need to be extra smooth for something like a wedding or first date.

Thanked: 317Depends on the occasion for me, and the time of year.
I sport a full but neatly trimmed beard in the winter most years, so I rarely do more than 1 pass on the shaved areas.
In the summer I wear a lot less beard, and then it's 1 pass WTG for the random work day, WTG+XTG for when I really need to look my best. I only bust out the ATG when smoothness is highly important, like date night with my fiance.
