Thanked: 1195That's a habit that should be broken very quickly. Not only is it dangerous but very hard on the edge too. Shallower angles make for less razor maintenance, which is a good thing

It's funny, but I've seen 90 degrees referenced in these forums as both vertical to the skin and laying flat on the skin.

I believe that's called "The O.J. method."

Thanked: 983Give him a slap on the head while he's shaving. That'll cure him I reckon...Just joking...Don't do that. Seriously though, I have no idea how to help you. Could you possibly ask questions to find out why he prefers doing it that way, and could you not point out to him all the cons of his method and the pros of your own?!
If he doesn't listen to his old man, give him a slap on his head! Just not while he's shaving.

Bad habits are hard to break. Some people do all the wrong things and yet things always seem to come out ok for them. He should be encouraged to do it the correct way but if he won't eventually a ruined blade or bad cut might teach him the hard way.

I think the best way is for him to learn on his own. If you can get him to experiment with different angles and strokes, he should naturally come around.
That said, I use a much higher angle than recommended on my neck as well. I do this because my hairs grow almost parallel to my skin, and through my own experimentation have found that a first pass at about 45 degrees does a much better job than 30 or less.

Thanked: 1371By 90 degrees do you mean that the blade is flat to the skin or perpendicular to the skin?

Thanked: 48by 90 degrees i mean perpendicular to the skin ok maybe its more like 80 but still way too scary to watch. the thing is that hes been doing this for a year now and his cut shave rate is the same as mine ie. not too offen don't even see how it cuts at that angle . i gave him the razor a ern nos honed it myself and after a year it is still sharp (just did a touch up) his strop
is also unusual its a storage box with a strip of leather a bought 10 inches long on the bottom

Thanked: 275So you want him to change his technique (which works OK for him), because it makes _you_ uncomfortable when you watch?
Is this really wise?
