I tryed that when I started shaving with cremes, and I've done it for quite a while. It seamed only natural to me, as the cream would wash away from the tips of the brush from too much water on it. There is still a trick to it. If you load the brush with water from the start (so you don't need to add water later) you have to be quick wiping the lather on your hand, because the water is running away. The other benefit is that after you smear the lather on your face with the brush, you can use the lathery hand to rub the lather in the face, recomended technique in the barbers manual. I always do that, it seams to help the lather reach the bottom of the whiskers better...

Once you get to know a creme well, you can determine the consistency visually. I also run my clay bowl under hot water for a while, so it stays nice and warm for my 2nd pass application.

ok, to see what this is all about I just tried the hand lathering technique
I got some very nice lather this way, as was said up-thread less air than in a bowl so that the lather could be applied thinner at the same coverage.
One problem was that after whipping up the lather I put a hot towel on for a minute, and after that the lather was cold. When I use a bowl, I keep it in the sink that is filled with hot water, so bowl and lather stay nice and warm.
Another problem was the amount of lather that was left after the first pass. I tried your suggestion, Lynn, running it under hot water, but it turned whatever was left very thin, and it was almost like shaving with hot water only.
Any suggestions?

I just soak my brush in hot water while I shower. I then just dip my finger into the cream pull out a bit put it on my brush and later on my face. There is always enough for a second and even a third pass on the brush if needed. This is the simplest and easiest for me. No fuss no muss.

I gave it a try and it worked very well. I still like the old scuttle though....
