    Default Best shave yet

I had honed my razor about two and a half months ago before trying a full face shave. I decided to hone again now that I have more experience with the straight. It was amazing the difference. I am sure that improving my stropping technique and much of the reading hear about honing has helped.

I did roughly three passes some areas got more. The shave is not BBS but nearly is. This promises to be a good day with a start like this.

Nice job! I, for one, would certainly be interested in hearing about differences in your earlier honing and stropping technique and where you are now. I'm where you used to be but not close to where you are.

    Congratulations on your success!

I am not sure this will help or not.
    this is my short story.
i have struggle and bleed for 6 months before find out what is a properly shave ready blade.
This is why i am asking you have you ever had your blade honed properly and you shave with it?
Properly honed blade will guide you right direction.

Mostly this happens to new starters.
1 they never get properly honed blade.
    2. they want to get the best edge out of the blade. spend so much time on honing and end up getting over honed edge. which gives very nice shave half of the face and for finishing next half they end up stropping in the middle of the shave.
    hope this helps you.

Before I answer I should point out that not every shave is so good and I still bleed often. And my face today still feels irritated, but smooth. The two seem to come together for me. But I expect I will get to where I have smooth and no irritation.

I'm not sure what the differences in previous and now were. I did not hone as much this time but it needed a lot of work previously. It had been unused for decades. I listen closely to the sound as I strop and want to hear it sing. My blade is full hollow so it sings nicely the better my technique.

Since you are on the forum I expect you have seen the wiki for stropping
Razor stropping - Straight Razor Place Wiki
    Listen to the mp3 files.

One of the biggest things is trying different ways of holding and moving the razor if I feel my skin pulling I now back off quicker. And I do more strechting with my left hand. Two or three days ago I finally figured out the proper direction for the right side of my neck. WTG is not always down for me so I have been trying different angles.

I agree with hi_bud_gl that getting a properly honed blade is a good idea. I had not wanted to because I was worried about messing it up with bad stropping. I expect to get a second razor and then will likely get it done proffessionally to give me a reference. I can't send mine out now because what would I shave with?

Also I had spent a couple months practising on only part of my face till I was comfortable with the handling. Then I honed my first time and was amazed at the difference. Should have done it earlier.

My guess is that most people would naturally assume a brand new razor in a box sealed by the manufacturer to be as shave-ready as it is possible to get........ next thing OUCH! This is exactly what I would have thought and abandoned it immediately in favour of a Bic or a Philishave, had it not been for the kind and helpful people right here to steer me ahead with their selfless advice. I owe you all a great debt. Thank you one and all.
