Default Van Dyke went down the drain

First, I learned the difference between a goatee and a Van Dyke this week; which, I had the latter. Then I shaved it off. I've been wanting to do this since I stared with a St8 in December but I knew my wife wouldn't be a happy camper. It's not the clean shaving that she minds but the fact that I look like a 12 yr old (I'm 40) when I do. So, I told her what I was going to do and she was surpisingly supportive.

Now, I'm clean shavin' and it will take some getting used to. The razor went through the hair remarkably well but getting the angles right and stretching the skin was a new challenge. I think the real suprise was the witch hazel and aftershave gel that was "invigorating" - astringents and menthol will do that. I'm going to keep it clean for a week or so and see how I feel about it.

I think with a Van Dyke the mustache and beard are separate, a goatee is all connected, at least that's the way I understand it.

    Goatee is just the beard.

This is correct, a Van Dyke can also exclude the upper lip mustache as well.

Check these illustrations out, I personally like the "Dali", "Supermario" and the "Sparrow"
