Shaving rotation, I finally understand
Well, I originally started out with the "I only need one razor" mentality which quickly bloomed into a sickness involving a dozen str8's. I've been merrily working through sets of them in rotation, just using them catch as catch can. Had an interesting "aha" moment today with my shave though.
I had a light growth and wanted to clean up a bit before visiting family for a housewarming. Reached for a very specific razor that I wanted (my 4/8 tuckmar frameback) only to realize that I haven't got it at my fiancee's house, it's at my house. I have 5 razors here and 7 razors at home.
Kinda threw me off a bit, and I settled for my genco spikepoint and got a nice shave, but it was the first time since I've started this that I wanted a very specific razor to accomplish a very specific task instead of just grabbing one at random and now I'm beginning to understand, just a little, this whole affliction

Yes, being retired the two bigest decisions I have to make every day is which razor to use and what watch to strap on my wrist.

Thanked: 4You both aren't quite too far gone yet. My shave (at home with all my toys) decision goes as follows. What kind of razor [SE=Christy, Injector, or GEM; DE=Gillette adj., or Travalong; Str8=one of the six main rotation or ?], soap or cream [many of each], and which brush of six? I'll admit to spending quite a few minutes pondering the particular combination of the day's shave before showering. I won't even mention the post-shave options. Sheeesh, rookies!

An inviable situation you both have. Often my dilemma is looking in the cabinet to figure out which razor is honed up, stropped and ready to go, only to remember none are and then realizing I'm running late anyway so I have to grab my favorite DE and get a quick shave and then dash out the door. I suppose I've got a long way to go, and retirement for me is still 20 years away.

Ed,
...retirement is 20yrs away for me also, and to make matters worse I run 5 miles most mornings at 5:30am...so i have learned to "get ready" the night before.

I hear 'ya Tobico, but prepping my razors the night before isn't always on the top of my priority list. I should set aside a couple of hours on Sunday and get a weeks worth of razors ready to go.

You actually strop them the night before? I strop them after I lather up while I'm waiting for my beard to soften up a bit. When one needs a touch up on the paste or hone I set it aside until I have a couple and then I do them in the evening. Haven't had to do that too much yet, got most everything professionally honed by Joe and only have a couple that have been victims of my own honing mistalent that need the touchups at the moment.

Gary,
Sometimes I strop at night...if I am going on a 8 mile run I prep everthing and set out my clothes etc to save time...if I am only running 3 miles, then I have time in the morning to get everything ready.

I've got a paddle strop so it takes me a bit longer to strop than those with a hanging strop and since I'm usually in a rush in the mornings, it's makes it much easier to have the razor ready to go.
