Default throw out your mugs/bowls/ scuttles

after reading lynns posts earlier about making lather in hand, and remmebering the article about making lather on the face taht classicshaving had, i decided to try making the lather on teh face.

I soaked a brush in water, shook most of it out and applied some cream to the brush. I then started swirling the brush on my face that i had pre-wetted with hot water. The results were the thickest lather i have had yet. I have been using this method now for a few weeks with very good results. the lather never gets "airy" like it tended to do when i would lather in the bowl.
If you havent tried this before i suggest giving it whirl.

I do this with soaps (directly on the face) but I haven't had as much luck doing it with creams. I can get a good lather with creams either in the scuttle or hand though.

you will get better results making lather in your hand then applying to your face...putting cream or soap directly can create a barrier or coating that will not allow the lather to work...

I rub the cream directly on the area to be shaved
and then go to work with the brush. This has
worked out real good for me. Lots of thick
    rich lather.

    But isn't the cream cold.
I use a porcelain bowl inside a silver mug that way I can surround the bowl with hot water to get a warm to hot lather. Even better when I re lather for the second pass.
Similar idea to Chris's scuttles I guess.

hot lather does feel nice for the first 2-3 seconds after it has been applied but i am not sure there is much benifit besided that initial nice feeling( I may be wrong) but if you want to keep it warm you can keep the loaded brush in whatever heating container you have and subsequent applications will be warm.

    Gary,

The first pass is warm to hot from the brush bristles
being wet with hot water. The second and third pass
are not really cold, more like room temperature.

Your method is definately a good idea and is
basically like the Moss scuttle. A lot cheaper
    too.

For Shaving creams there isn't even a need for a bowl. I soak my brush in hot water as I shower. I shake the excess water off and put an almond size dab of shaving cream on the brush. I then lather it up on my face. Warm from the brush and nothing to clean up. It also works the cream into the beard. No fuss no Muss. Just my 2 cents.

I tried this (creams), but it didn't work at all well with my boar bristle brush. The badger brush did ok, but the boar brush just doesn't hold enough water or doesn't hold the lather as well or something. Of course, the boar brush worked a lot better for hard soaps, and those I lather directly on my face.
