Well a guitar neck is a lot bigger than one on a 5 string. And I do let my thumb peek over the side, just like Earl. As to shaving with the non dominate hand, it take me longer, especially around my chin. Some days are good, and others are better. So I continue to switch hands. Anyway, whether picking or shaving, for me the point is to have fun.

absolutely, i really enjoy doing it, the most frustrating thing is waiting the day or two so i have enough stubble to go again. I've taken to stropping in between days. it's suprisingly therapeutic, getting the perfect "hiss"

I'm left handed and most of the time I do most of my face with my left hand but my chin and most of my neck I do with my right, go figure. However now and then I'll use both hands more and mix things up. Most of us southpaws are way more ambidextrous than right handed folks.

In the end there are no rules, no real "proper" way. You have to do what's comfortable for you. So if that means you only switch hands for certain portions of your face (as opposed to uniformly) then so be it. Or shave with your dominant hand only, it really doesn't matter.

But you're using the wrong hand ......
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Though I'm a reasonably ambidextrous leftie, after almost a year and a half with a straight, I still shave only with my dominant left hand, so far with mostly equal results on both sides if I'm stretching and paying attention. It's weird, though-I throw a ball, cast a fly-rod, shoot a pistol, swing a golf club, and pick a guitar right-handed, but I shave, write, and shoot a rifle southpaw.
There are many roads to sharp.
