One thing you could try is to switch to cold water shaving. Some peoples skin(mine included) reacts better to shaving cold instead of warm.

When I started shaving with a straight razor my neck area seemed to be the most affected. This happened a couple of times. I then noticed that my neck whiskers near my ears grow up. Under my chin they grow down to about the Adam's Apple. Under the Adam's Apple they grow facing back up again. On the side they grow more down, but a bit toward the back of the face.
I then started shaving my neck on both sides always going up, along with under the Adam's Apple. The rest I shaved normally and I have not had razor burn since. I do NOT go against the grain as I am quite happy with the closeness of a 2 pass shave. I also use Udderly sMOOth Udder Balm. found at Wal-Mart, Dollar General and some other place. This link -> Dry Skin - Get Udderly Smooth Udder Cream for Dry Skin and talked about at this post: http://straightrazorpalace.com/pre-s...pre-shave.html I will put it on a lot of times after the shave. Face is nice. I put it on about 5 minutes before I shave. Here is a hint: when you apply this stuff you can feel the actual direction of your whiskers growth as it glides on easy one way and kind of scritchity the other way. Try it once and you'll see. Really great pre-shave stuff.
I noticed that when I rinse my hands off with water, after having applied this, that it is extra lubricating, almost like personal lubricant. I see there is an oil that one uses to put on the face to shave with as a substitute to the normal lather. Since this is so slick and moisturizing I merely lather up and apply to the already applied application on my face and it is a wonderful shave!~~ Vern ~~
I was born with nothing and managed to keep most of it.

Thanked: 1195Larry, the advice you are giving is sound, don't get me wrong. The issue is with semantics. If we are talking about a WTG pass we cannot use the term BBS in it's strictest meaning (as in smooth all around). I think "directionally smooth" would be more appropriate and less misleading for newbs, who may believe that a true BBS shave is possible with a WTG pass (and may think they, as a consequence, are doing something wrong). Just thought I'd throw that out there for consideration.......

+1 Here. I'm in FULL agreement with Larry's quote "when you run your hand over your face in the WTG direction," but recognize too that feeling BBS in one direction is not the same as true BBS. Hopefully that clears the air for any guys who might have gotten confused there.
Then there's DFS, but I won't open that can of worms!
