Thanked: 4Dubl Duck First Shave
Hey all, I am new here, have been shaving with a straight for about 3 months. I have a Dovo 5/8", been great so far, but once the bug bites, we know how the rest goes....buying lots of razors.
I just got a Dubl Duck GoldenEdge 6/8" ROund Point in the mail today. First of all, it is a gorgeous razor. I wil have to get some pics up. Most of you know what the look like, but this once is in un used condition. Got it for $50 on ebay with shipping.
So I threw it on my soft arkansas stone for about 10 passes, then onto my 6k Japanese waterstone for 15 passes and stropped it about 30 times.
My badger hair brush isnt with me as of now, so I was using a boars hair, with crappy Williams soap. Miss my normal shaving stuff, but it hasnt shown up in my mailbox(in college). Even without the good soap im used to or the badge brush, this razor was AMAZING.
I have very coarse bear hair, normally having to strop it at least 2 during shaving. And to get smooth I need at least 2 passes. I did one pass, and stropped it once and my face so super smooth! I love this razor. I am having a wonderedge come in the mail in about a week, and I am like a kid at Christmas now.
Just thought I would share my good experience and tell everyone to try and get one!
Any of the honemiesters think that the 8k norton would get this even keener? THanks!

Congrats on your new razor, you sure can pick 'em! goldegde and wonderedge, awesome! Good to hear another shaver is pleased with the results as well.
I'm fairly certain that a norton 8k would be able to get your razor even keener, but how much more keen, that I can not say for certain. There are also many number of different hones as well as paddle strops, that should be able to bring a razor to hair scaring keeness, which would probably be much past the japanese 6k.

Thanked: 4I figured the 8k notron would be a good investment. I think I am also gonna get a strop with a .75 or .5 micron diamond paste setup.
This thing will pop hairs right off my hand, but the HHT isn't there yet. Still very happy.
The only other razor I REALLY want is a big 8/8 Dovo or Bengal.

Thanked: 346The HHT doesn't work for everybody's hair (doesn't on mine). What does seem to work is using a cheap badger brush as your hair source. But I'd think a paddle strop with at least 3 micron and 1 micron pastes would work well with your current setup. I'd probably go for one of the 4-sided strops with 3, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 pastes.

Actually a boar hair brush would be the optimum for the hht. However, I've managed to keep the edges sharp without resorting to it. Armhair test would tell me when I'm coming close (and I'd check every section of the edge). Afterwards I'd just do a 1-5 1-5 1-5 for luck and finish with 10-20 passes on the couticule.

I have about a dozen DD of various types and I've found they all give about the most consistantly great shaves than any other razors I have save the puma's. It doesn't matter whether they are the top or bottom of the line, oldest of last ones manufactured. You can't go wrong with any DD.

One of my first babies has been a DD and it does give good shaves, but I'd place it somewhere in the middle of the rotation. I had better experience with the Bismarck and the Tonsorial -- the 2 blades similar in grind/style.

Thanked: 4After feeling my face for the first time with the DD my girlfriend wants me to do her legs. That should be interesting!
My dad has a Japanese Awase stone, somehere in the grit rang of 8k-10k that he has for his good wood working tools that I may try the razors on as a final wipe clean.
I picked up a chisel of his once, and actually cut myself on it. Seems this maybe a good stone too He said he paid over $200 for it about 10 years ago when he was into his woodworking hardcore. I have also bribed him into making me a nice set of handles for a few razors of mine outta some ebony and maybe even zebra wood.
Good ole pops.

72miura,
Sounds like you may have the sharpening situation down with the Japanese Awase stone, but I'll go ahead and throw in my 2cents. Don't buy the 8K stone. Instead get one of Tony's pasted paddles. I also have a Japanese 6K waterstone that I use, and it will get my razors shaving sharp, but you can get sharper using the paddle. An 8K stone will also get your razor sharper than the 6K, but the paddle strop will get even sharper than the 8K, and it is no problem going directly from the 6K to the paddle. So, skip the 8K and go directly to the paddle (assuming you will eventually quit using pop's awase stone and buy something of your own), that's what I do and get phenomenal results with minimal time and effort.
