    Default Oil and razor

Hi guys I probably have this in the wrong section but I was hoping for a little advice for a newbie.
I have just got my first straight razor (been using a shevette until now)
I wanted to know how I should remove the oil?
What oil is suitable to put back on?
    Thanks guys

    sweeneychris,

Dip the blade (not scales !!) in hot soapy water and wipe carefully with paper towel. You can use a stropping motion for the edge.

The most cost effective preservative is mineral oil (e.g. baby oil). To use, make sure the blade and scales are dry then moisten tissue with the oil and wipe blade and tang; use a stropping motion for the edge. You don't need gallons of oil, just a thin film.

As as day-today preservative, I use Sentry Solutions Tuf Glide, which is a dry film protectant which has worked extremely well for me.

    Have fun !

    Bets regards

    Russ

Russ has this pretty much covered. I would only add that you should strop after shaving and let the razor air out before oiling it for storage. Since I shave at night I let my razor sit open overnight to dry out; conversely, if you shave in the morning it would be best to leave it to dry during the day and oil it after work.

Everyone has their own idea of the best protectant to use, and how to apply it. I keep it simple and use heavy mineral oil on toilet paper and have never had an issue with rust. Whatever works, right?

Correct Ryan, whatever works!! I use the Camellia oil I purchased from SRD, it wipes off clean with tissue; again whatever works!
