    Default Shaving While Sitting Down

I recently suffered a bike crash that has me hobbling around on crutches. You don’t want to hear the boring story ……

What’s interesting is that I was forced to shave sitting on a small bench this morning instead of standing. What a completely different experience. For example, I was further away from the mirror than normal which affected my viewing perspective. Additionally, I kept bumping my elbow on the sink – not a good thing when trying to use a straight! I’m really lucky I didn’t cut myself.

Anyhow, it’s amazing how small changes can really throw things off.

Glad to hear you ok, both from the bike crash and the sit-down shave. Now if texting was involved in your crash, we want to hear about it.

It is nice that you find the good things in trouble. I hope you will be fine soon.

I'm going to try to shave sitting on a chair or something, for fun!

I've got MS and shaving while standing is difficult for me. My legs have enough strength to stand in the shower and maybe the first pass with the straight. Then I have to sit down. You're right. It's a difference experience - perspective is off due to the distance plus you can't see the detail of your face you can when standing closer to the mirror. I've gotten used to it now and it's no big deal. Just an additional curve to add to the learning.

Glad you are in a position to shave after the accident and are on the mend.

I don't think most folks appreciate this however when we shave the whole routine is kind of like a system. Just change one little thing in that system and the entire experience changes and usually not for the better. Sometimes just a different handhold on the razor or a razor with a slightly different geometry is enough to do it.

I completely agree with you, thebigsendur. Personally, I think it is best to utilize a simple and consistent shaving setup. Adding new variables requires a person to constantly adjust their technique, which, in turn, may jeopardize their shaving experience.

diyguy, I am glad to read that you are doing somewhat OK with the accident and all. I hope you get better soon. Your post made me realize the difficulties that people with disabilities may have with even such a simple act as shaving. Without trying to be insensitive to people with disabilities, I would be very interested to read about the shaving techniques utilized by classic wetshavers overcoming a disability. Thanks for your post.

Likewise glad to hear your doing good after the crash I pray that you'll have a speedy recovery. As for the question about people with disabilities I have Cystic Fibrosis it doesn't inhibit me from standing, it's a lung disease, my affliction is I cough a lot. Doesn't seem to be a really big deal in every day life but it's dang scary when a blades around your atoms apple. I'm not complaining though I know there are people way worse off than me just weighing in I'm thankful just to be able to come and go as I please. Also, to be able to shave with a straight i feel that's one of life's great pleasures and a right and a privilege.

    I couldn't agree more.

Last November I was travelling (Nepal), for a week or so, I was shaving with a straight razor in very primitive washing facilities, just a tap (fawcet) on the wall dispensing rust coloured (and rust fragranced) water. It is suprising how different the experience becomes with just the absence of surfaces to put anything down on whilst lathering between pases etc.

I hope you're healing well and glad to hear you'll be alright. In the meantime I suppose you could install a shaving mirror to compensate for the distance.
