Default Straight Razor for thin hair.

Hey guys, I'm 18 and apparently still relatively per-pubescent, I still can't grow a full, manly beard. I've wanted to start shaving with a straight razor for a while, but today I went to the barber shop and got my neck and sideburns cleaned up with a straight razor, I am officially in love. I was curious whether or not using a straight razor for thin facial hair would be effective at all.

    Thanks for the help, folks.

Yes, it would be effective. I have very thick and course hair. So I think a straight razor would decimate thin hair.

Yep. And you won't have to get it honed as often either. Lucky you!

LOL, Mitch I'm 35 and I can't grow a full manly beard. It's manlier to shave with a straight than it is to grow a big beard in my opinion anyways.

    Rob tells you right, Mitch.

Spend some time in the wiki, the home page link "your first straight shave', and on Glen's 3/11 tips for beginners on stropping. Light or heavy beard will get the benefits of a good straight shave. Some guys only have to shave a few times/wk. Other's stubble could lap hard stones. Either way, the shave will last alot longer, become more of an indulgent pleasure, and you won't be tithing at least $5/wk to Gillette or competitors.

Heck yes, go straight now. You're young so you're one who'll be able to save a bunch not buying those darned cartridges like us old farts who did for years and years. At your age you'll learn fast too. Go for it!

Hi Mitch - I'm 55 and still can't grow a 'manly' beard - I put it down to us only having a fixed amount of testosterone and I don't need to use the best part of it to grow facial hair......hehehehehe

I'm 56 and have a don't have a full, "manly" beard, although with age the whiskers have become stiff.

The answer is Yes. Until the "light went on" and I got into DEs and straights, I had about 40 miserable years with cartridges, disposable, and electric razors.

It really doesn't matter what your beard is like. Definitely give the straight a try and be patient! It took me about two years before I really thought I had "mastered" it. Watch a lot of videos from experienced shavers.

This is the video that helped me the most:
