Thread: First honing and shave

Yea, I believe you are right when you say they compliment each other and up the ante on both. I try and avoid chasing the magic bullet in hobbies now and be more of a make it work and refine it guy. To get that last 5%-10% can be too frustrating and expensive to boot. Learned that lesson from both shooting firearms and photography. Sorta if it ain't broke don't fix it thing.

I really can't remember the last time I used my 1K to re-set a bevel, I do circles on the 4K until I can reliably shave arm hairs then do some more very light strokes on the 4K before I move on to the 8K and I do my Pyramids to finish.

Maybe I"m hampering myself, but it seems to work out so I don't fix what ain't broken !

Yours is a wise approach. For me the result is an edge I can comfortably (much more so than with any other shaving method) shave ATG in one pass without damage. The only other contender is a shavette but it lacks the ability to lie flat against my face while maintaining edge contact. The result is nicks as the higher angle which results guides the blade down to skin.

It is really JimmyHAD and SRP to blame for my unquenched obsession to find the magic stone. Without their influence I might have gone back to the ignorant bliss of cartridge shaving.

Okay that is probably not true.

Well, my target is to get as good a 3 pass shave as I can with my Gillette Fat Boy. I was satisfied with what that DE gave me and I am into straight razors for the nostalgia and something different. Just want the same excellent shave and I think we are almost there.

Well, the last razor honed, father in laws Wostie Peerless, gave a decent shave. It also nibble my ear lobe in the process as a reminder to watch what you are doing with a square point or it might have been his reaching out from the great beyond reminding me to continue treating is daughter well. Either way point taken. I might take this one back to the hones for a bit more tuning. All is well that ends well, end of saga.
