This straight razor shaving lark ought to come with a warning message! Dangerously addictive! I've only been doing it for 3 weeks now and I've 7; 3 new ones and have ordered 4 vintage Sheffields. I can shave well, BBS but it's still taking me around 25mins to do 3 passes but no cuts for ages now; I can only assume I will speed up as I get better with time. I'm on a ship which will be going round the Cape in a week or so, shaving whilst the ship is in heavy weather is adding to the challenge.
I wonder how long, if at all possible, one could shave with just one razor every day, along with regualr honing; could it last a lifetime?Last edited by postmastergeneral; 08-21-2012 at 04:20 PM.

Thanked: 458To shaving with a straight razor, my wife said "you're an idiot". I only started because I wanted to gauge how tough it was for people "in the old days". Turns out if they had a decent razor and a decent finishing stone, it wasn't difficult at all. Likely they could get better strops back then than we can get now, at least in the moderate price range where all of our strops are cowhide.
My mother brought up the earth thing. That'd be my mother who talks about a lot of green stuff, travels the world, and heats a huge house for two people.
I didn't start shaving to be green. Green is all fine and good, but the best way to get to it in reality is to be poor. I don't want to be poor.
Or in terms of facial stuff, growing a beard.
There is far too much satisfaction to be had with straight razors to ever put constraints on it.
I should have an escher very soon - I hope to get some of that "too sharp" feeling that people are talking about - at least if it can be had without leaving bits of a wire edge on a razor.

Uhhhh, have you thought that threw? Poor people buy cheap cars that aren't the best for the environment - rich people buy little "green cars." Poor people live in beat-up houses that use way more resources than even a larger home that rich people own but who buy energy efficient stoves, washers etc. and quality windows etc.
Heck! You could argue that the rich persons pooh is cleaner than a poor persons if you really wanted to go wild about it! Certainly rich people are reputed to eat at fast food chains much less than the poor and those sir are a planet killer!
Just saying...David

Now back to too sharp. Anyone take their harsh edge down 2 strokes of crox and then shave it again?

Bahahaha
Ok - so I did what Lynn stated and ran my blade over the chromium oxide - but there is a twist. I figured as I honed two razors - the two razors I know now to be rather harsh on that first shave off the rocks at the same time, and the same way, I would try them together. Note that the one was used yesterday so it should have calmed down a bit (it is usually one or two shaves before happy shave time).
I used the Revisor to shave the left side of my face, and my Boker to shave my right... man that was weird but you know, it's an experiment.
The tools:
The outcome:
Ok so on the first pass with the Revisor that I had used last night, it felt better. Not much, but better. The Boker was a disappointing. That crisp feel came to my face as it normally does.
Pass two: The Revisor is still ok BUT, the Boker is a KING! Smooth as butter. It was almost as though someone had switched out my blade on me. It was weird - truly.
Pass three: Revisor is still chugging away all status quo, but that Boker is giving me the shave of its life lol .
My little conclusion: I haven't used chromium oxide in a long time. I will use it on my Boker from here on in after a hone. I personally think Lynn might have nailed it on the head with this one. As for the Revisor - well I think Glen might have hit the nail on the head in that I don't know if it came off the stones as well as it has in the past. Two shaves, and no butter is poor considering it's past performance.
Take from all that what you will, but I have to tell you something else lol - in all the excitement of the test... I forgot to strop my blades altogether LOL
Apparently the Boker didn't care!!David
