Upper lip shaving.
Gentleman,
Being somewhat of a noob,Im still learning the straight razor shave I'm having a real hard time with the area between my upper lip and nose, like where your mustache would grow. First is getting the razor to shave smoothly in a tight area and how do u skin stretch this area?? Right now I'm just still touching up with a disposable in that area which is killing me.. Any suggestions??

Upper lip shaving.
I'm pretty new as well and asked almost the same question. One bit of advice I was given was to try shaving more from the outside of the stache area towards the middle...then again on the other side. Not completely sideways, but more just angling down and towards the center. Worked great for me and I haven't had any problems since then with that area...
The chin on he other hand...that still gives me some issues...Classic, traditional Barber and owner at Barber's Notch in Brigham City, Utah.

I have a 6/8 SR. I find it helpful by shaving the middle first. I lightly position the blade under the nose, then curve it downward as I shave from under the nose towards the upper lip.
I then shave the sides by shaving from the middle towards the outside, at about a slight angle (i.e., blade is not parallel to the upper lip). I lightly scrape the blade on one side from the middle towards the corner of the lip several times, so as to make several passes with the blade on that side. I repeat for the other side. I stretch the area by making faces; I don't use my hands for stretching that area. You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

This is how I do it: I make sure I wash off all the lather on the blade, so I can see where the blade is touching. I then make my upper lip curve underneath my front teeth (if that makes sense?) so I can stretch the skin. I then make the angle of the blade maybe 70 degrees? I then shave with downward strokes on the left side of my face with my right hand and vice versa. I only use the 70 degree angle when I'm right under my nose. The further away I get from it the less the angle is, until I'm at 30 degrees again. For the second pass I shave from the outside in and for my Third pass I shave from the inside out. I hope that all make sense BTW my razors with Barber's Notches work really well for shaving around your nose. The nostril fits in the notch and you can really get the blade in there. You can also move your nose with your freehand so you can get the blade underneath there better.

Thanked: 0some tips ive found
shave the rest of your face first but lather and re lather the mustache area every time you re/lather to soften the hairs
i start on the inside with the heel of the blade and my stroke is somewhere between a wtg and an xtg i guess
be mindful of where the REST of the blade is, not just the small part in contact with your mustache
ive also found that moving your face/puckering/duck facing/whatever you wanna call it is really helpful to move your face to the blade contact level rather than doing all the work with blade maneuvering
its been said before but the best technique is what gets the job done well, not what is "textbook"

Thanked: 375I start at the center, and do a scooping type motion, move my nose out of the way and basicly for each side proceed with the same motion until I'm further from my nose. For a second pass I find I may have to pull my upper lip to each side stretching my upper lip to make a flatter area to shave (closer to the corners of my mouth and in), and get it with a XTG from the corners of the mouth/uper lip in. I might have to try the teeth thing myself to keep the upper lip taut. I think if you look on youtube I'm sure someone has a vid of shaving the stache area with a straight.
