You may also consider checking out
various clips on Youtub on shaving
with a DE. There will also be a lot
of pointers on proper prep as well.
Soap suggestions...
Mitchells Woolfat
Tabac
DR Harris
Cream...
Castle Forbes
DR Harris
There are also many others to consider.
Just checkout the soaps and creams part
of the forum. Tons of good info here.

For me, shave oil has very limited use. I tried it directly on my face and experimented with mixing it with lather. Mixing with soaps kills the soap, you just get a thin useless lather. You can mix it with creams and see if you like it. As for soaps, I like MdC unscented and Klar Seifen. Creams, Casstle Forbes, Speick and Proraso are my favorites so far. If your beard is very heavy, you might consider a pre-shave cream. Proraso makes two that are not expensive and I find effective. I would get an after shave balm. While you are learning you will probably enjoy it soothing qualities. Again, I find Proraso, Speick and Trumper's skin food to be good choices. Have fun and good luck.
The tale is doon, and God save al the rowte!
