Film on Youtube
I've search the archives for youtube... but could not find a link to the current films about shaving with a Straight Razor. I found it fun to watch them, so just would let you know they are there: http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...straight+razor
Especially the ease 'Ulf' shaves himselve across the grain amazed me... not to mention 'the barber shave 2006' which was the first glimp for me of a Barber shaving a customer with a straight. But there is more... 'much' more...

Thanked: 0I watched those today. A couple were kind of amusing. The guy wiping the razor clean with his fingers was scary. And did you notice when he was done he looked almost the same?
It's amazing what you can find on the web huh?

The one with the barber shave I thought was pretty cool. That guy looked 30 years younger after the shave.

The incidental music on "Barber Shave 2006" (mostly the banjo and yodels, and not the song about getting your hair cut at home) is cribbed from my favorite modern comedy movie, "Raising Arizona."

OK - as a newbie, I'm interested in Ulf because he seemed to violate all the "rules". He slapped that razor on the strop and only did a few laps instead of the standard 20-30. He also seemed to use the razor at almost a 90 degree angle on some parts of his face instead of the 30 degree angle I see recommended.
With all that in mind, I'm curious why he still has a face left.

I guess he's tough...
seriously, I found it hard to watch. He also seems to talk / mumble / grunt while shaving. I don't think I'd try this
Cheers

Is this the guy with the pony tail who is speaking German or something? I've seen that video, and there's a thread on it around here somewhere. He does a lot of things that are, shall we say, "unconventional."
He goes against the grain on the first pass, wipes the blade with his fingers (which some members do, but I think it's a bad idea for beginners), seems to strop incorrectly, and uses a steep blade angle.
My theory is that he's got a really light beard and tough skin, and he doesn't mind a shave that's not too close. His face doesn't look much different after the shave, if you notice...
I think it also goes to show how forgiving a straight razor can be once you've used it for a while.

Josh,
I think this guy shaves in a quick and macho way, but for sure knows what he is doing! Maybe there are more way's to get to Rome than the 'SRP approved' way.
And I do think that he shaved of many hard beard hairs and got a close shave (comparing his beard in the beginning of the clip and at the end... and listening to the scraping sound while shaving).
Just my two cents,
Michel (who would love to be as tough as Ulf - let alone have such a masculine name-)

This sounds like a different video from the one I was thinking of.
You're right--there is more than one way to get a close shave. But the nice thing about the "SRP approved" way to shave is that it should work for most people. It's based on years of tradition and the combined hundreds of years of experience that our senior members have (I'm not in that group!).
These videos tend to show one quirky example of SR shaving, and the techniques probably would result in serious injury for most guys.
So, emulate with caution.
