Thanked: 10Please someone help
Hi everybody. I'm new on SR shaving.. I didnt follow the advise of many people and started with an expensive razor TI Le grelot... I bought the razor about 8 months ago and I finally received it 3 days ago, because one of my friends kept it until he was able to come to Mexico.... I bought also a naniwa 12k hone and a strop....
My first shave was not pleasant at all, and I feel the razor is not sharp. There was a lot of pulling and tugging... I dont know if is my technique or if the razor was not sufficiently sharp.. or a combination of both...
The worst part is that I see something on the blade that I believe is rust.. please check out the pictures for reference...
Do you thing I should give a few passes on the 12k hone?? I bought the razor from Vintage Blades and the razor came oiled and proffessinally sharpened,, so I dont know if the edge was messed with all this time that was not used
What are your thoughts?? could you give me an advise??
thanks a lot

Blade looks ok to me. Learn how to shave. Can't recommend honing, since I don't know if you know how to hone. Although a 12k in the hands of a beginner is the least damaging hone around, I'm betting most people would terrorize a razor with one. Even if you took the time to learn how to hone, you'd probably never practice enough before honing to actually pull it off.
I suggest sending the razor to another nearby member for an evaluation, a honing, and a shaving lesson.

Thanked: 57If the razor is pulling then it is not sharp. Practice stropping with it and then send it out to a pro for sharpening. Then you'll know for sure what a sharp razor is like and you'll know that the bevel is right. The bevel is the most important. Once the bevel is set right you'll be able to maintain the edge indefinitely with your Nani 12K.

You may consider watching this

G'Day and welcome, ledemon.
It certainly is a nice looking razor.
There are many things that will cause a razor to pull rather than cut - too steep an angle, incorrect face prep, dry/thin lather - to mention a few.
I have no experience with the vendor you mention, however if has been hand honed rather than factory honed prior to delivery, it should be OK - you might like to check with the vendor to make sure.
As has been mentioned, have a look at some of the videos here that may help.
If you edit your profile and lets us know where you are, there may be someone close that would offer to help, face to face - the best way to identify issues
I forgot to mention that careful use of metal polish should remove that mark on the blade - KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE EDGE - not only will it dull the blade but you won't even feel the end of your finger go missing (go on - ask me how I know this...hehehe)

Thank you all, and thank you Havachat45 .. I think it was a combination of bad technique and that the blade was not shave ready,, it was the first time I shaved with a SR.. no pleasant at all,, mi biggest mistake was an incorrect angle and no proper pre shave preparation.. But Im certain the blade was not very well honed,, I lapped the nani 12k and gave like 200 strokes and then stropped... It was absolutely better.. At that point it was able to pas the HHT... Now I have shaved 3 times with it and I am falling in love with this blade...
