Default Water Spots - I finally figured them out

So as a newbie, I found that with my Dovo Bismark I was getting these gray spots near the edge and a couple closer to the spine. I searched and searched the forums and found alot of discussion but nothing that really concretely described a solution and MANY answers saying "just live with it - it's a razor" or "I think it provides character". I didn't like that so I'm putting this up to help others.

I figured out that these gray spots are not rust - they are water spots. I tried toothpaste and rubbing them out but it didn't work. I went with MAAS metal polish and using a Q-tip I was able to get rid of them. But now I didn't know what to do about preventing them since I didn't really know where they even came from.

Well, now whenever I shave, I rinse the blade and dry the blade with my towel every time. I never imagined that the water spots would appear within the time of a shave but they do. I recommend that every time you rinse the blade from the soap you dry the blade. This will keep the water spots off.

    Good luck.

Renaissance wax helps protect the blade from water spots and other bugaboos after the metal polish cleans it up. Also, I find keeping a box of kleenex around and drying with a fresh tissue can help keep the spots at bay.

Oh that's the other thing I didn't mention...

I was using Mineral Oil and then I was using Vaseline after my shaves but it wasn't helping with the water spots. This is why I was so puzzled. It's because I didn't realize that the spots were forming WHILE I was shaving! After you shave, there is no water to create spots.

How long does the wax stay effective? How often do you have to re-apply it?

It is good stuff and will stick real good. Of course stropping and honing will remove it on the spine and edge but the rest of the blade will be protected for a considerable time. I've read that applying a coat and letting it dry, repeat for two more coats, and it will be bullet proof, but I've never gone to that extreme. If you use it you'll see the water bead up on the blade like rain on a freshly washed automobile.

Depending on where you live and how hard the water is and what minerals are present sometimes it's easier to remove rust spots. Some of those mineral spots adhere to the metal and don't want to come off with conservative methods.

Try the tuf glide tuf cloth. Works for me. With the cloth in my palm I do a stropping motion. Let is sit or a few minutes and then wipe off the extra with an old shirt.
