Thanked: 0Trouble with burn on the neck.
I'm very new as well to this sport. I have what I consider a good prep....correct me if I'm wrong please! I have trouble on my neck. Specifically the whole neck! My whiskers grow to my left ear and not up or down. I take a hot shower. Use a exfoliating face scrub that says it softens the whiskers. Put on some lotion and face lather. Any suggestions? Just when I think I got the right angle...pinch....or I get done and my neck has the burn.

I think most everyone has the whiskers going in a random direction on one place or another under the jaw line. IME razor burn is almost always from too much pressure. It took me some time to figure out which direction to stretch/pull the skin, angle of attack and all that. My particular skin can't tolerate too many passes. Even if I do everything right I get some burn if I go beyond two passes and a touch up here and there.

Thanked: 3The beard on my neck grows in E W direction and i haven't figured out a good grip/stroke to come at it WTG. However I have found short strokes N-S followed by S-N passes do a decent job. Not BBS but pretty darn good and definitely passable

And, if you aren't already, splash on some witch hazel afterwards. It's cheap and works wonders for razor burn. And I second what the others here have written. Use a light touch, a low angle and stretch your skin as tightly as you can. It takes awhile to get it right, but it'll come if you keep at it. My face was almost crimson from burn for the first couple of months.

Thanked: 1195I think most guys who have this issue are trying to follow the traditional passes - WTG, XTG, ATG - and end up suffering razor burn as a result of too many passes trying to get it smooth. My neck whiskers grow side ways too, and I find that two XTG passes are sufficient for a nice smooth shave: one pass S to N, followed by N to S. Stretching is important too.

I generally only do a North to South pass on the very bottom of my neck. It helps even though it might not be super clean.
From their stillness came their non-action...Doing-nothing was accompanied by the feeling of satisfaction, anxieties and troubles find no place

When I first started with my first few shaves my face would have put a cooked lobster to shame.
Too many passes and too much pressure will do you in. You have to map out the area and figure which way to go and how much to stretch and in what direction. That's the key.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 2I burned my neck good earlier try to get it all smooth. I am slowly getting better as I go down my face, now I have to get the neck figured out without any burn.
