Thanked: 12The show stopper
Anyone else have their shaves abruptly ruined by a bad cut? well today was my 4th(th) shave with straight. Just got my nortons flattening stone in after the store forgetting to ship it with the 4/8k so i honed up my razor stropped it and went for a shave.
The shave was good, best I've had since started. Everything was going good until i did a blind razor swap from 1 hand to the next and sliced my middle finger wide open... leaving me unable to stretch my skin so alas my shave had come to an end and out came my cartridge.
Just curious as to how many folks have had their shaves come to an end from a bad cut?
Cheers

Thanked: 1195The worst cuts I've had from straight razors have been on my fingers, so you are not alone lol
A bad cut can definitely psyche you out, so it's best to switch to another razor, whether that be a DE or cartridge to finish it off. The last time I cut my finger badly (also doing a "blind pass" ) I just wrapped it with toilet paper and plowed on, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone, even a well seasoned straight shaver.

My worst came when stropping. I wasn't paying attention, and next thing I knew my razor was flying through the air, slicing my finger to the bone before crashing to the floor. The good news: the tip was damaged so I had to send it to a pro for repair and honing. When that came back I finally knew what a shave-ready razor was like.
So when I say I found out the hard way about the difference between pretty sharp and shave-ready, I mean it.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 3226Not while shaving, touch wood, but during honing that W&B you saw. Dropped my cheaters , reached for them and somehow put an inch gash in my finger. Welcome to the club. At least you know your honing and stropping is up to par.

I did mine while polishing the blade. I got a bit vigorous & sliced into the side of my index figure & half a cm into the side of the nail itself. My nail & skin are still recovering from the ordeal.
I have had cuts on my face in the early days where I should have stopped & resorted to the mach 3 but out of sheer bloody mindedness I didn't. Bleeding, nervous shakes & a very sharp blade are not a good combination if you don't want to end up looking like something from Hellraiser.Last edited by Kaden101; 03-27-2013 at 08:48 AM. Just hope a sneeze doesn't sneak up on you while shaving. I ended up with a nice gash that went from just under my left eye and down to my jaw line, just under the ear.

Thanked: 3226My wife was doing some research on family history from Ireland and was going through a deaths registry looking at causes of death way back when. There were a remarkable number written up as suicide by cut throat razor. I always wondered if some of them were accidental caused by one of those sneezes or coughs that sneak up on you. After your experience seems to be fairly plausible.

I feel I should also note that shaving with a straight whilst a very large half-wolf dog sleeps near one's feet is a potential disaster. One simple ring of the doorbell and chaos ensued. Luckily I managed to escape that one with a minor slice to the chin, but I image it could have been much, much worse.
