Hehe, no lessons for me either. Dad must have figured that if I was too dim to figure it out myself then I deserved to have a beard.

I remember watching him shave a few times; once I said, " I can't wait till I get to shave, too. "
He stopped & looked at me with a smirk, replied, "Wait until you've done it everyday for 6 months, then come back & tell me how you like it."

Well clearly he wasn't using a straight. I'm excited before every shave now that I use straight razors.

Well there you go, see? In this mundane, workaday world we live in, where every second is devoted to pushing our noses ever harder on the grindstone, that little ray of light that is straight razor shaving brightens our day and girds our, umm, loins for the daily slog. (no loins were harmed in the making of that sentence.)

Anyway, I will stop hijacking this thread - No matter where your shaving origins begin, may all your shaves end up straight!

My 5 year old son is already in love with shaving. In fact, any time I shave and he doesn't get to shave with me he gets mad and starts crying or pouts for an hour or so.

After seeing me shave, he was super excited when we went to Target (a big box retail store for those outside of the US) and he saw a toy shaving kit that had foaming soap (you know, so he gets clean in the tub) a toy plastic razor shaped like a cartridge razor, a tiny brush for lathering, comb and mirror. He was all like "Now I can shave my beard like you, Daddy." Of course, I had to buy it.

Fast forward to my next shave. I hopped out of the shower, applied my pre-shave oil and put a hot towel on my face. After I was done, I ran a bath for him while I worked on building my lather. He immediately jumped in and lathered up while watching me do it, following my example. I pulled out my straight and began making my WTG pass and hear a sigh from the bath tub.

"Daddy, this razor is no good. I need one like yours."

Needless to say, he now uses my shavette (blade out, of course).

I'm actually keeping an eye out for a Genco Safe Edge so when he starts shaving for real, his learning curve might not be as steep. I've found one and got a great original leather travel case with it, but alas, it didn't have the guard.

Yes, I'm not alone at having that experience and therefore having to learn how to shave as a grown man.

My baby girl peed herself during her nap today. She stumbled half asleep into the bathroom, sat down on her little potty, stared at my face with a big smile and said, "Daddy shaved his beard!"

@ Jimbo - I think you are on to something with the slowing down and taking time being good and I think it can be good for our kids too. Even if my little girl never touches a straight (and she probably won't if she barely grows any hair on her legs and arms like her mom) I think that when we make time to do things that take an extra something it rubs off. Today I shaved with my straight, worked on a cedar bench and made pizza from scratch. I could have produced more efficient results by other means, but I wouldn't have enjoyed my day as much. Maybe that will rub off on her somehow. She did her first somersaults in the grass today - that's more her style.
