Thread: In the shower

I know and have read here that using a straight in the shower is a no-no. Guys I just cant seem to keep my face wet enough to shave at the sink. I have tried several different things (hot towel, lots of water, good lather) and I cant keep my face as wet as I do in the shower. Here is my question. Does anyone here use thier straight in the shower? I have a shelf, good lighting and a fog free mirror in my shower. I really want to try using the one straight I have in the shower and see if I can get a closer shave. The only thing I have not tried is a pre shave oil at the sink. Should I do that before I try the shower?

I'll advise against shaving in the shower again. It can cause physical damage, shorten life and ruin the appearance. It's also hazardous to you

There are at least two problems with shaving in the shower. The razor gets very wet, which can lead to rust if you don't dry it out completely afterward.

Also, the razor gets wet, which makes it slippery and hard to grip. If it slips, you'll have 2 or 3 ounces of atomically sharp steel falling 5 to 6 feet, picking up speed as it hurtles toward toes and other important body parts...

I wouldn't do it.

Your face doesn't have to be dripping wet to get a good shave. Can you tell us in detail what your routine is, so we can isolate some potental problems?

I normally shave in the shower, with a Fusion, badger brush and a few different kinds of cream. When I shave at the sink (with the straight razor) I wet my face a lot! hot towel, I work up a good lather, and then shave. At the sink my face seems to get real dry and I get a "pulling" sensation on the whiskers. I start shaving right after I apply the lather and my skin still feels really dry.

I have the following creams T&H 1850 and Almond, ZIRH cream, AOS Sandlewood soap. I also have Proraso pre-post cream. When I used my straight for the first time I used the T&H almond.

I found T&H 1805 to be perfectly fine, but I haven't tried the others. Try using more water and spending more time whipping up a lather on your face.

I did. I spent a good amount of time and had a really good lather going. The lather kept a real nice warm feeling even when I applied it to my face a 2nd time.

Your shaves will get faster with practice which should lead to less drying of your lather.

On the other hand, its perfectly OK to refresh your lather from time to time during the shave to keep things wet. Even Lynn does this on the DVD.

Just thinking about shaving in the shower with a straight gives me the willies.

Cuts, even hideously deep ones, can heal. The (possibly) enormous chip the razor will suffer when it hits the ground cannot.
