Default Today's Project, aka: A Better Use For Firewood

A couple of years ago, I helped my brother clear some trees from his backyard after a bad storm. I kept a bunch of apple wood in the shed for smoking meat.
Today I decided it would be a good idea to try turning a bowl on my lathe. I've never attempted a bowl before, so thought it would be a fun project. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and I learned a lot.

I left a lip on the inside of the bowl for scraping lather from the brush.
Not pictured - I cut rings in the bottom to help grip the soap when it's getting close to being gone.

The overall height of the bowl is bigger than it needs to be. Having never done this before, I was worried about blowing the bottom out, so left myself a lot of material. The finished thickness of the base is about 0.800

Anyhow - here's the finished project, with my last puck of Bairlea Farms soap pressed in:

Very nice work! the lid and bowl recess is a very nice touch. I did aa couple projects years ago from a branch of applewood and was shocked how hard that wood is, but it does finish beautifully.

It does take a beating to as well, made a couple mallets, no wonder it was used extensively for handsaw way back.

Is the inside of the bowl treated with something that keeps it from absorbing the water, moisture?

I just used tung oil on it.

I'll see how it holds up over time.
