what do you think of this work?
Hi there, so i am new to this forum but looking forward to to talking with many of you. I wanted to show my new work and see what people had to say about it, the good, the bad and what i might do to make things look nicer? So to start i got some blades and started restoring them and thought i would try my hand at a few things like file work and making my own micarta and this is the result. Some have silver pins and others have hex keys. i just got a bunch more i am going to start working on as well as a nice wade and butcher i will keep for myself when it is done. any thoughts on what i should do to make them a bit nicer? They have not been honed as i dont have any stones yet but that is my next thing to get. There are some missing that i will post later.
Thanks

Thanked: 634Is that two different razors. The top one looks like a DePew monkey tail. If so you have a great razor and did a real nice job. congrats

I really like your filework, can you tell me how you did that? I tried my hand at filework a while ago and did not get the best results... The holes are really not for me, I like solid scales.
If you want, you can look into some photography tips. I found a setup with two lamps on either side and a white A3 paper as bottom/background to give very good results, such as this:
I want a lather whip

Ok so here is a better view of some of them and of a blue handle one i finished last night.
Some of the ones from before with better views, I use chain saw files and a lot of time for the file work. If anyone knows of a better file to use on hardened steel that cuts well and wont where out i would be grateful for the info

Thanked: 1184Your waxing the car before you wash it
You should buy some blanks and start from there. Many will cringe if they see one of their favorite razors modified. As for the file work, ummm most do it before the razor is heat treated. You work the steel THEN harden it. That's why your having such a hard time. Your work is as hard as your tool.
Your file work is nice but if you file that Wade and Butcher I will want to slap you. :<0) Not really but you get my point ?Last edited by 10Pups; 09-19-2013 at 03:53 AM.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

LOL im not planing on touching the w&b with the file and if i do it is mine forever I like the idea of blanks but i dont know how to harden steel or have the tools to do what i want to it. Any thoughts on where to get some good blanks for not to much money? Besides the file work what are your thoughts on changing the shape of the point?
Thanks

Thanked: 1184You should look in the workshop section. You will see what everybody else is doing and how. You can make razors out of files which you can buy for a buck at a garage sale or ten brand new. Bruno makes blanks and I would chat with him if I were you. I think he sells them in the classifieds here. You can make a forge pretty cheap find something to use as an anvil. Like I said I like your work and as much as you seem to enjoy it I am sure you can find a way to learn and do more.
I am a live and let live kind of guy. If you want to customize your razors, more power to you. If you want to expand your skills and/or need encouragement to do so I think everybody will support you there. That is what this forum is about :<0)
I like all points but mostly use the squares. Yours are cool but I would like them even more if they were on a razor you made.Last edited by 10Pups; 09-20-2013 at 01:21 AM.
