Gillette Brass DE Comb 1932 ish ??
Hello,
Here is a Gillette brass DE comb, I believe, around 1932. If I'm wrong on the description, please help. I cleaned her up & will post her in the SOTD later this week.
Thanks for looking,
Hirlau

Thanked: 522I recently went on a buying spree on ebay and about 7 vintage brass and two gold plated DEs. I don't know what possessed me to do that because I am a died-in-the-wool straight shaver.
Five of my vintage DE purchases are just about the exact clone of the DE you have pictured above. They shave quite nicely but I prefer the straight shave. DEs are nice to look at and I intend to make a display rack for them.JERRY
OOOPS! Pass the styptic please.

Thanked: 169I bought an old star lather catcher today. Doesn't have the old wedge blade remaining, however. At least it accepts SE blades, though.

I let it soak in Brasso for 30 minutes, put the cotton rag to it, then brushed it with a toothbrush & Colgate.

I believe what you have there is called a Gillette "New" long comb. Try doing some searches on that to confirm. I actually have one just like it, and I think it shaves great! I don't use it all that often as I try to use a SR as often as possible, and I'm still making my way through a blade sampler. So far, I like the Merkur blades, but I haven't yet tried the Astras (I've heard great things about the Astras in combination with this razor).
Yours looks to be in really nice shape; all the plating looks to be intact in the pics, which is not always the case. Good find!

That is a New model gillette and they are just really good shavers. A work of caution though Brasso is completely take off any plating particularly if you got one that had nickel plating, and you did. What you have left is very handsome brass and copper and it did not affect the shave. Many of mine are just the same, but most were plated with nickel and it is very thin! Brasso and Colgate are sure to remove the plating on almost any DE or SE razor. Gold ones such as the Milord or Aristocrat are plated with Gold and then lacquered and you will end up with a brass razor!
You will love the shave from that one with the blade of your choice.

Those New open combs are very fine shavers especially on a heavy beard. Before I switched to a str8 I named my open comb 'The Brush Buster'

Thanked: 20I have two just like it, and they shave pretty good not real aggressive. I have narrowed
my blades down to either the Feather from japan, or the Astra's and personally for me the Astra's work the best in this type of DE.
