May I Introduce Shirley ?
I've spent about 15 mins with Dremel rotary wire brush and Mothers on this.
I'm not too sure, but I see little evidence of any honing, (bad eyes don't you know)
yet the "L and D" in Sheffield are worn down to just about nothing.
I'm liking the spike, A-LA Dubl Duck, but the $30.00 price tag was most un-duckish.
Any info and comments welcome.

Looks like more than just a bit of metal was removed from the tang.

Based on the close up pic of the tang, it looks like the tang got touched by a grinder. Either that, or a weld/heat modification to the metal.
Do you feel any wear on that tang side, by the missing "L" and "D"?You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

Thanked: 1184Okay here comes my 2 cents....if I was shopping on the bay and saw this, here is what I would think. The scales have worn down the mark from opening to shave position. I think that because of the direction of the wear marks. The spine looks like it has light hone wear in the middle and the bevel matches that perfect as it looks wide in the middle. That could just be the light except it also looks scratched some. I think I would pay what you did for it because it looks like a nice shave will come out of it and it's a pretty darn good razor over all. You did good :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanks Martin There seems to be either a "010" or "C10" stamped into the tang thingy as well, and my amateur sleuthing came up with this:
10Pups, you're right and have better eyes than me I can see the hone wear you mentioned:
Thanks for your help guys !!Last edited by bongo; 09-27-2013 at 06:11 AM.

Thanked: 4249William Shirley and co, was the predecessor to Clarke Shirley and co, the reason behind the razor being a W.Shirley is that Clarke Shirley and co used a different stamp on the tang. And they both used the corporate trademark 0I0.
Its really the same company, but it just make your razor older.

The tang seems fine to me. We must remember that the stamps were struck by hand.
Imagine a day of doing just that! They are sometimes lighter on one end or the other and sometimes a bit askew."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
