    Are you referring to the "Solingen" and crests? That is called etching and I believe it is mostly decorative. During stropping and honing with a hollow ground razor the spine and edge should be the only parts of the razor that come into contact with the strop or hone. The etching should not be affected so it would not be a good indication of wear.

    This video shows etching being done with modern methods. The blade is first laser etched, then gold plated. The etching process begins at 2:30, but the whole video is worth watching.

    The gold etching, as stated earlier in the thread, are purely decorations.

    Since the razor is a hollow ground razor, it will not be affected by stropping.
    And don't be afraid to wipe it clean after use using a cloth or towel.
    It will hold up just fine.
