If you plan to use them... and you should!! They are more than worth sending to a known good hone person. They are pristine and should not be hone wore out by a careless honer... I had a NOS and not cheap Razor that came back with a half century of hone wear along the spine and a huge bevel. The guy said it was a difficult job... Geeze! It lost half of its value and I had to pay for the screwing. Didn't shave for crap either.

Richard you are spot on. I've had some razors I used for improving my honing skills and thought to myself "this poor razor survived all these years unblemished and I just ground it away in minutes." Thankfully they were bought just for that purpose.
Looking forward to shaving with these but want to keep them in their lovely condition. Thanks

I wouldn't have paid the person. And also I would have asked him to buy the razor for the damage he inflicted upon it. You are a more forgiving man than I.

On your question of a lead wedge, based on my experiments I would have to say no. Lead-containing, quite probably, but not pure lead. I had read about 'lead' wedges and tried making my own, which promptly oxidised to dull grey (as lead does) within a few weeks. So I think most of the old ones were a lead-containing pewter, to be semantically correct.

Well I honed up #1 last night. I had to figure out the right amount of tape for the wedge and then do it in sections. The entire edge did not sit perfectly flat so had to watch that I was getting each section.
First things I noticed were the feel and how fast it cut. I have heard that Sheffield steels are softer? Sure seems like it.
This one was pushing my limited skills and HHT was so-so, so I was pessimistic on the upcoming shave.
Anyway, I did some CrOx, stropped it up and gave it a go this morning. I think the best way to describe it was 8/10 on sharpness but 10/10 on comfort. Wow, what a comfortable shave! Didn't feel half the surprise with aftershave than usual. The wedge combined with Sheffield steel is new to me - I believe I'm a solid fan now!
