Thread: Latest RAD result

Just got this in the mail. Still trying to decide how much clean up i want to do. Thoughts?

That is how i ended up with this. SWMBO won't let me get a sword, which would have to be a battle ready blade for me to be happy, that i could display so i got this instead. I took off the bamboo since it was really brittle and falling apart and there is some rust where that was so i will be removing most of the patina. thinking i will leave it in the stamps to bring them out.

I've en looking for a good deal on one. They're very interesting and utilitarian looking and I think I need one someday. Interested to hear how it shaves!

Do not clean anything up,have it honed and use it.

Sorry pixel. it had a lot of rust that that to go. I did decide that i would leave most of the pitting since the edge was not effected by it. Kinda like that look for this one. I honed it up last night using a video Lynn posted a while back that i found. The BEST shave i have had to date and it was my first time with a Kamisori, and that was only using my Norton 4/8. I don't have a finishing stone as yet but even at that point it was amazing. As soon as i find my serving string i use on bowstrings i and going to wrap the handle for a better griping surface. after that i will post pics.

Your omote (i.e. the less hollow, unstamped side) seems to be nearly completely flattened out. To quote Jim Rion (from the enclosed link below): "This means that not only is it difficult to hone in general, it leads to an edge that simply won't shave due to the lack of contact between the very edge and the hone, as well as an excess of jigane slurry in the mix. Lots of scratches..."

So it will needs to be hollowed out again. Jim Rion made a useful discovery a few years ago for this, namely a small bottle with sand paper to function as a grinder. Read all about it here. I have not tried this myself, but I trust Jim wouldn't put up a bogus solution.

Thanks for the tip. I made due with a single layer of electrical tape and got a pretty nice edge but if i have issues in the future i will keep this in mind.

Don't sand out the stampings. That is the only thing that matters in the "soul" of a kamisori. Once the stampings are gone, it is just another piece of razor sharp steel.

Don't worry. Those will stick around. it is the other side that is in need of re-hollowing
