Default Gillette NEW common bar handle (long open comb) gold plate

I hear such great things about these, I decided to try one out. I took my time and watched eBay until I found one with the handle intact (no cracking). My only other DE is a Merkur 37C Slant-Bar, and I thought this would be a good complement: less aggressive but not unresponsive; open comb rather than safety bar; gold plate rather than chrome; vintage rather than new production.

And of course, it arrives right after I've had a shave! I guess that's what tomorrow is for…

They are more aggressive than the short comb new by a fair bit. The short comb actually has the geometry of a tech pretty much but with a comb, the long has a fair bit of bite for a gillette.

Yes, I've seen pictures that show how the blade protrudes noticeably from an imaginary line tangent to the head and baseplate. At the same time, the gap b/w head & plate is considerably less than on my slant-bar, which I imagine means less blade flex.

My first shave (terrific) aligns w/ all this: it felt aggressive enough in a good way, that is angles matter and I can use that responsiveness; at the same time, it has more stability than my slant-bar, not threatening to "get away from me."

Very pleased! Can't wait to get to know it better.
