i sealed my scales in a zip lock bag with some oil, didn't seem to take very much just enough to surround them.

Thanked: 4826yup me too. I put the whole razor in a ziploc with between a teaspoon and a tablespoon of neetsfoot oil and put it away for a while. If you check on it and all the oil has been sucked up just put a little more in. The color won't come back. I think that is the best part.

you could try saddleries or feed barns for neetsfot oil also
I was ziplock baggin mine, now I just have a little lunch box with an inch of oil it all the time at $10 a litre I keep my new horn slabs in it fulltime & any new horn straights get about a week regardless when I get them
you will be supprised at the grain that will show on horn when it refreshesSaved,
to shave another day.

Found some neatsfoot oil today and have them soaking in a ziplock. Will probably give them a few days at least and see how they look...can't wait to see how they look after they've been hydrated a bit

So it's been quite some time since I got this razor, but I finally was able to come across a bevel setting hone that I picked up. Worked with this razor on it yesterday, and after setting the bevel, I ran it through my coti routine.
Had a shave with it this morning, and to be honest, I didn't expect it to do very great since this is the first I've used the Norton 1k and the first time I've set a bevel on a razor. I had my Ralf Aust sitting by the sink as my backup to finish the shave.
After the first pass, I was about to grab the Aust, because I didn't feel this razor doing anything at all. Went to rinse my face, and wow! It did an excellent job and I didn't even feel like it was cutting any hair. Finished up with a full 3 pass shave and didn't feel anything, even ATG! Got done, zero irritation, and complete BBS! Very minimal burn with the Clubman after I cleaned everything up.
I think I found a great one here...that was probably the smoothest shave I've had from any of my razors to date (about 2 yrs of straight shaving now). I also think I'm now hooked on honing myself. Between the Norton and the Coti, it gives me a lot of hope that I can do this. I've also got a Zulu stone, but haven't had much luck with that one yet.Classic, traditional Barber and owner at Barber's Notch in Brigham City, Utah.

Very nice razor; I have a recently acquired Joseph Rodgers "CTTM" myself. Just read your thread and now I'm very curious - how long did you end up soaking the scales in neatsfoot oil? How well did it restore the horn? I'd love to see the 'before' and 'after' photos if you have some.

The pics at the start of the thread are the before pics. Here's one of it after the oil and honing. I didn't spend a lot of time cleaning up the balder, kind of liked the patina look. The scales came out pretty well from the oil though, definitely more refreshed and less brittle feeling.

Thank you. Definitely a significant improvement on the scales. They're really in very good shape for 120+ years old!

Not really sure how old it might be, but figured it was older than my others due to the short tang. Really think it is that old?
