Thanked: 169Today's $10 Coticule Score
No joke! $10!! 5"X2.5" of garnet-laced goodness! I did need to scrape out the old traditional glue and fuse the sides back together with modern stuff, but $10! Only downer is I have to wait a day for full curing of resins. I already ordered a slurry stone.

Thanked: 169Curing. Between this and my Vosgienne, I'm killing it lately with hone acquisitions.

Not trying to be a one upper but there is this little antique store with an old british lady running and she has shaving stuff but doesn't really know what any of its worth. I found an old combo coticule a little smaller than yours for 5 bucks and another barbers hone for 5 bucks as well. You can always find great deals if you know where to look. My cheapest razors are my best razors and same with my stones too. My best finisher I got for free because a guy I ordered from accidentally sent me the wrong stone and said it wasn't worth it for him to pay return shipping and ship the right item back (which was a lesser quality stone) so he refunded my money and let me keep the stone instead of sending me the right stone.

Thanked: 169Oh yeah?? My $8 Vosgienne. Granted, this one was a mess when I got it and took much work, but $8!! This thing turns steel into laser beams hair explodes off of. Hoping this one has good cutting power on slurry because between a 1k, the new guy, and the vos, my stone setup has been drastically upgraded. You can actually slurry this Vos and pretty much use it like a coticule to generate a stunning edge as it has much cutting power on slurry.

Thanked: 32152-3 drops of Smith’s honing solution on a flooded stone will give you a great edge, post 8 or 12K stone on the Vosgienne stone.
Make a lite slurry with Smith’s and water and thin to just Smiths and water by adding drops of water and Smith’s. I slurry with a small Ark translucent but a Diamond Credit card plate works well also.
Long very lite X laps will give you Escher + edges.
Nice finds, enjoy.

Thanked: 169Oh, I've had that vosgienne for a couple of months now. I lapped it all the way to a really shot piece of 2k w/d. I've experimented with all sorts of buffers to finish on and have mostly always been rewarded with incredibly keen edges that are forgiving at the same time. Best so far was a mix of water and a loose mix of water glycerine, and some very light oils. I will try your suggestion when I have a chance. I also have a small 4x2 trans white ark that I never bothered chamfering/lapping as it is new in the box. Maybe I should suffer taking the sharpness out of it to have a nice slurry stone for the vos. The only reason those are not THE rage is that they are hard to get... That, and they literally give zero feedback. At least mine doesn't share any info during finishing. I have to watch how the fluid on the stone is interacting with the edge and then stop. If you go too far on that stone it is bad news. I've been going to it from an 8kish synth, so I'm hoping this coti can replace the post 1k synths and maybe pull the edge that much further along than an 8k level before it meets the vos.

Thanked: 3215I like the Arks as well and have some large Blacks and Translucents and love those edges. My slurry stone is ½ X ½ X 3 inches, old translucent.
Just a couple of laps raises a thin slurry.
Smith’s is water soluble and works great on Slates, Coticles and Arks. Just a drop or 2 or 3 on a wet stone.
I get it at Lowe’s locally. I put it in a small 1 oz. plastic bottle from the Craft store because the Smith’s bottle will not release one drop at a time.
A bottle will last a long time and sells for about 6 bucks.
