    Default My first "Bargain" finds!

Hey everybody! The wife and I went out junkin' at our local shops and aside from a few vintage albums, the day was a bust.

Later that day I went to run a few errands and on a whim, stopped by Goodwill. Lo and behold, there were two old razors in the case. I figured for $5 each, I couldn't lose!

Turns out I got my hands on a Union Cutlery Spike with a little smile a Wester Bros. Anchor Steel with some rust.

About to sit down with some Flitz and clean them up. Hopefully a little TLC will make them shavers!

Yeah, that little one (4/8ths?) has some quirky/cool scales.

Ok, here are the results after spending the afternoon rubbing them with Flitz and honing on a Norton Combo. Just tried each of them with a very short pass on my cheekbone and they are definitely getting there. The Spike may need some more work, but I'm pretty pleased with my $10 investment!

The scales on the spike sure brightened up nicely.

They sure did Hart! Here is a close up of the scales for you. They both have what appears to be grain, though I'm sure both are celluloid.

How about one more of the spike showing the whole thing with the name on the side.

Nice finds. I've been going to flea markets, pawnshops, and goodwill stores with no joy so far. One of these days................

Ok Gents, today was the moment of truth!

Used the UC Spike to shave off a 4 day beard and other than some slight tug near the toe, it was a very pleasant shave.

I even had my Henkels ready to do my neck and jaw, but the Spike performed so well on my cheeks I just went ahead and used it on my whole face.

I've also learned from this that my "edge estimation" skills have a long way to go...as you'll note I initially thought the WB would be mroe "shave ready" than the Spike, but it appears to be the other way around. I stropped both last night and tested them on my forearms. Both shaved, but the WB edge felt "rougher" if that makes sense...almost like using it on my face would be begging for razor burn. I will take it back to the Norton and strop again, but I think my "bargain" razor purchase may lead to me needing to buy a 10k or 12K stone. LOL
