Thread: My my I got lucky.

Well yesterday I went to an antique shop and scored these 3 for $45(AU) which I thought wasn't too bad really. The razors will need to be cleaned up and I'll most likely replace the scales on the Bengall as it looks like it has some cell rot coming on but I knew this when I purchased them and was quite happy to do so.

So I went on to another antique shop and was asked to leave for trying to do a deal on some more scuttles (lol) The owner seems more like a hoarder rather than a business person but that's another story.

Afterwards I went to my mate's house to show him my new acquisitions. He seemed interested and told me that his grandfather used to use a straight razor and that he had a few of them. He then goes to his shed and comes back with a bag...

It contained all this (the 2 razors I purchased plus another 2 I already had are shown as well). It had been sitting there since his grandfather passed away in 1979.



Yes it had 7 razors (plus one not pictured that was very badly affected by cell rot), 3 of which are shaveable, 1 shavette which is shaveable and 2 hones which are flat and very smooth!

He says I can have them. (Check out that Puma!) Now I do intend on giving the Puma a sharpen and a clean and returning it to him (I think it could fetch a good price on eBay, (I've seen a lesser quality one going for around $150 recently).

So now I have more razors than I know what to do with.

Here are some more photos of each razor. They vary in their condition, some are better than others and some need a lot of attention, quite a few frowns but I shaved with the Can't-Be-Beat last night quite comfortably.

So a bit more detail of each razor (will go over more than one post.)

Most of these look like they will be shavers with some TLC, no damage ore cracks, mostly cosmetic. Some heavy frowns may eliminate some from use. I really want to clean these up and perhaps even give some away as gifts and getting people started on straight shaving. I'm sure that's what my mate would want and obviously has already done in my case.

Bengall I purchased with a spike. It is beginning to rust on one side, there also appears to some thick grease on the tang.


Bengall that looks like it was quite thin to begin with given the width of the scales, heavy frown.

Birko Number 50, I really liked this one as the box and the scall had been engraved by it's previous owner, I'm quite glad there is no cell rot as I'd like to keep them on to add to it's history. I reall hope I can clean the blade up with out losing the birko logo, am taking any advice on how to do it! This is one of the ones I bought from the antique shop.

This CBB is the one I shaved with, it has a pretty noticeable frown but didn't seem to mind destroying the 2 month beard I was sprouting, it needs a good strop, maybe even a hone.


Essex number 1, very sharp could be shaveable, I haven't tested yet.

Essex Number 4, very nice, shaveable despite the rust on top, looking forward to restoring this


Kropp, not sure of this one, would like to restore but may never be a shaver


And of course the lovely Puma, I'd love to keep it but I am going to buy a strop and a scuttle for mate, get this to shave ready and give it to him for a gift



Please feel free to add your thoughts, I'd love to know more about these razors and hones but I'll post more about the hones in the hones forum.

Wow great score! And what a good idea to restore the razor and return it, that's what friends do.

Nice haul, that Puma looks to be the jewel of the bunch.

I suggest you stay away from the lottery for a while. Looks like you used up all your luck scoring this great haul. I have a soft spot for the Bengal, hope it's salvageable.

I wouldn't do much with your buddies razors. If you teach him to use one he may regret giving you that pile of heirlooms. Just saying :<0)
