My lastest and greatest rock pile find.
On Monday of this week I argeed to help my new sister in law load and unload her horse trailer with hay from the field
after getting done helping I decided to take a look at the rocks that where laying around.
Man am I glad I picked up this gem off the ground.
It weights in about 2.65 pounds.
I just simply rub my made in China chef knife I use at my job on it dry it makes a wonderfully fine cutting noise of steel.
My Boss rubbed his Mac 8 inch chef knife on it and said wow.
Does any one know what kind of rock it is.
I use it dry cause water can't lube it at all and is nice and clean.

Thanked: 4826Its hard to tell from the pictures. My guess is the slate family. It is after all the biggest group, and encompasses a lot of rock. Give it a good scrub with a nail brush, it will start to show some color and patterns.

I like all stones,,,,I'm assuming that you will cut & lap it,,, as it looks now like a 2.65 pound rock with a 1" 1/2 honing area.

Yes, much clean, very sharpen.
I was just thinking about finding some stones "in the wild". Although the area I live in may prevent me finding any that I can sharpen on...

Cool; lotsa rocks up there. In this part of NC the only thing coming out of the ground is sand, red clay, granite or tobacco.

I know my grandpa lived in NC before he died nothing but sand in his yard and pine trees.
He had littery one Oak type tree and it was a white oak. And it Looked like a bady tree. It had to be under 30 years
old. Well look at the bright you might never destroy a lawn mover by hitting rocks.
I was kind of bummed on that Monday night. Though cause I came to realize if I want to get a farm I need
to also have aleast a full time job around where I move to. Cause the farmer my sister in law bought hay from works
two full time jobs to be able to farm and get by.

Thanked: 480Being from Orange County, that does have a high possibility of being slate. But there certainly are other stones in that area. As for only having sand, clay, granite and tobacco, I don't know about the others, but a good piece of granite makes an excellent hone!
