Dovo with cell rot, a leap of faith ?
AUD$29.50, it's totally buggered, I'm estimating 5/8", I've never bought something like this before,
but hey, who doesn't like a challenge ?....I'm going to learn a good lesson either way
Would you try to rescue a classic ?

Always a gamble with a full hollow, as there isn't much metal there. I hope it works out for you.

Once you get that rust off and take to the hones you may well find the dreaded Swiss cheese or devil's spit corrosion on the edge. I bought a 5/8 Puma a few months ago that looked alright but the heel region had some bad pitting - it worked out OK though so I hope your's does too. Let us know what you find under that red stuff.
BTW the pinning at the pivot end looks a bit crude; it looks like an amateur has re-pinned it at some stage so you might want to consider redoing it if the edge warrants it.
All the best from the east coast!

Thanks mate ....Yeah, those scales don't look too good anyway and the pinning job looks "pre industrial"
to say the least !!
I'm thinking chop the scales and save the Dovo inlay whatever eventuates. I'm a bit intrigued with the shorty tail as well.
Don't know if it's original or been shortened for whatever reason. Worth a try to save a classic blade anyway.
Holli4pirating, it didn't occur to me that a full hollow had less "meat" than other styles of razors, I live and I learn !!
Despite the senior member tag next to my avatar, I'm still a newbie, always will be tooLast edited by bongo; 06-26-2014 at 08:18 AM.

Question-When did most razor manufacturers (major ones, like Dovo, Boker, Henckels, TI, etc.) quit using celluloid to make scales?? Or do they still do so??

I think that one is a bit too far gone. We'll see ......
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Before you put a lot of time in you might want to try a quick (5 minute) clean, couple layers of tape and see if you can set a bevel.
If you can't - not able to find and solid steel, you will at least save some time and frustration.
If you can - then you can proceed with the time, energy and care to try and save the blade.
It would be a shame to spend hours on it getting it cleaned up on the surface only to find out its as porous as a coral reef...
Good luck no matter what Mate...Support Movember!

A fellow straight razor user I know, LilRascal I think his SRP username is, showed me a razor that had some pretty significant cell rot. We're talking actual little holes in the blade when he got the rust off, Swiss cheese was an apt description.
Anyhow, he cleaned it up, put it to the stones, and say's it is an incredible razor, it's his ugly duckling razor, yet he say's it shaves like a star.
So give it a shot....

I would say the rust isnt that deep...looks quite promising, also had one like this, rust could be removed very fast....
Bevel setting was the only thing as already mentioned here which got a bit difficult...had to remove 1-2mm Material....
So much fun and please post updated pictures here...███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███
