It's mine! ALL MINE! Joseph Rodgers as big as an F1 Spoiler!!!!!
-
-
Holy cow man that's a big one! Tell us how you came to acquire it.
-
Very nice. My rogers are fantastic shavers. Clean it up it should be a beauty. Even if it is far to big for my tastes I still like the looks of it.
-
Nice one. You'll lose a little getting past the chips but it will still be a plenty impressive hunk of Joseph Rogers. Please don't rescale it just because of the bug bites. Not unless it is cracked or something. Neatsfoot and TLC can bring those 200 year old babies back to life. :tu
-
Yeah, I don't care about that, it is pushing 1 1/4", the chips don't matter much to me. I want to take it off the pins, sand, save the dust, shore up the chips, re-contour and just pop them back on.
-
Very Nice.
My last one still has the bug bites, I never bothered to fill em. They're character. i just polished them up and they are awesome :)
Great blade, enjoy
Mike

Estate auction. I had fair warning so I dumped off a bunch of pieces where I knew I'd win because I could go to the limit where the $ wouldn't make sense beyond unless you were keeping it forever and a lot of those guys are dealers buying flip stock. They traded shots for awhile but ended up cowering like they always do...
-
That beast has been a thousand miles up and down a hone judging by the spine wear and it's still a big as a barn!
Great find!
-
cant wait to see this thing all fixed up.
-
It's quite consistent in the wear department which is great. I've had some Sheffield razors with crazy hone wear patterns.
-
I am going to have Glen work on this. I already have a massive Wostenholm at his workshop that is close to its turn in the resto queue, so when that is done, I'll throw more work on his pile. I am capable of restos by hand, but it is tricky to achieve a consistent result without the benefits of a proper workshop and blades like those demand that level of attention.
-
They are interesting Blades, great shavers,A PITA to strop.Mine in Ivory,Long gone:(

Do these usually have the stabilizer setup like yours did? I have seen two others of this size besides mine, but mine is the only one I have seen with the minimal stabilizer setup.

 Don't remember offhand, here is a pic of the lovely thing ..... Attachment 171256
Got it on an ebay buy it now for $50.00 and the guy lived in the next town. I met him at the Dunkin Donuts so didn't pay shipping. One of those where it was posted as soon as I logged on and I nailed it ..... luck of the draw.
Here is one I copied a pic from on the web. Don't know whose it is, or where I got it from. Different layout on the blade, and quite a beast. Would love to have that, even if I only shaved with it once in a blue moon. :beer2:

You could dig a foxhole with that last one, maybe I should hone my entrenching tool to shave with.
-
those chips & hone wear look way excessive save your self the trouble & just send to me, I will find a home for it in my rotation LOL
OK maybe not
that is a rather impressive blade should clean up great
a good month in the neetsfoot oil & those scales will come back very translucent, then at worse a light 2000 or higher grit clean up will bring them back to life for sure
-
Interesting about the stabilizers,the differance.
When I sent mine to Sham to be honed,he commented that out of the several he had honed in the past, mine was the only one he had done that would take and hold an edge.
He felt that heat treatment was a problem with such a large thick blade.
Wonder why they changed the stabilizer Design
-
I think maybe guys got too aggressive in restoration stage perhaps and screwed up their steel. Those guys were masters. Even cast steel from the 1790s that is way soft holds pat for awhile. |

I expect the ones with stabilizers were probably reground at some point.
-
The one I got holds a heck of a good edge. Shaves real nice. That is an interesting thought about the ones with the stabilizers being reground. I've wondered myself why the stabilizers seem to have come and gone. I figure with modern blades they are more trouble than they are worth ? More work to grind them with stabilizers I mean.
-
They were hollow ground from the gitgo,do not see how they could be re-ground to create that stabilizer
-
I've been coming across a lot of regrinds of old near wedge sheffields lately where they were ground to basically full hollow and given a big stabilizer, but those JR seem quite uniform in their stabilizer setup when they have them. Getting back to the temper, there are a lot of dremel happy ppl who probably got greedy because the blade is meatier in grind and overheated it. There are some people who seem to feel the need to polish any blade no matter what it is to the level of a mirror within a deep space telescope..

You keep mentioning the dremel, are you thinking the stabilizers were modified??
-
No no. I am talking about guys who get way too hamfisted with the thing on nice razors and screw them over with overheating the things or catching the edge. I personally think they were original to the razors either way. If Wade and butcher did them both ways, why wouldn't another major maker? Two massive blades, just different grinds.

Exactly. Those guys knew what they were doing, and designs bend to new tastes over the years.

:deal: ........ Pity ! I see there is rust in the notch point and on top of the spine. I hate to see you get stuck with it so out of the goodness of my heart !!!! PM and I'll take the poor thing off your hands .... :rofl2:

That's just chips off the great pyramid. It'll survive. This is my Wostenholm Glen is working on (I'm sure he'll post that in the workshop when he finally gets to it, it should be spectacular given the setup I am going to do). As huge as that one is, this one is even bigger, I think. Just overall, everything is massive. The tang is as tall as most german or american blades are.. It's awesome that these even exist.

Tang vs a normal blade. 11/16 German blade. Madness.... Attachment 171571

Tang is 3/4 in spine is 5/16,mine had the orig Box,they are huge:) talkin about the JR
-
Between the two I am guessing the Wostenholm will be easier to use as the profile allows for some finesse, plus it has jimps. This guy will need almost negative pressure. Nice, mellow coti edges are the order of the day with that. Could you imagine either of those with a maxed out JNAT edge or something, it would be insanely dangerous.

Mine was an esher edge, was perfect.

You'll have do some arm curls to strengthen your shaving arms before you start. Can I recommend 10 lb dumbells in 3 sets of 10 reps.
-
This one doesn't have horrible balance. Slightly biased forward, but not too bad at all. I find balance and a generous tail are the keys with large blades, in general.

I knocked off the superficial corrosion to see what is really going on. It didn't really did not do any damage to the faces of the blade. The top of the spine got the worst of it.

As far as I am personally taking it. You can already see a massive improvement from the first video.
