Is it necessary to have a piece of tape over the spine or is that only if it has spine wear. Myself, since it shows no signs of previous honing I was thinking no tape is needed to hone it. BTW, it is the older setup. I love it, I think it is a very cool set. Wish I could find a Wilkinson Sword straight!
I honed mine with a layer of tape on the basis of why cause unnecessary wear.

And, do not hone fast as the flopping blade will beat the snot out of the hone in about twenty strokes if you don't slow for the return..

Very cool Wilkinson Sword set, and good job/price on the Rolls. I've got the Rolls, and like to get it out to play with/shave on occasion.

Great find with the 7day set. I have been looking around for a set like that. I found that the Rolls Razor that I have is really easy to slap the blade on the hone. I had to make a jig to hold the blade to hone it up which I still haven't finished honing it. I don't know how hard the steel is in the blade, but it is a PITA to hone.

I found that it isn't hard to slap the blade on the Rolls into the hone but other than that it is a cool se razor. I still love my straights best because you have variety, age & style. There are just so many different ones. I will enjoy to use a se once in a great while.

Yea, the blades on a Rolls Razor and a Wilkinson are a PITA to hone. I hone them on my regular Naniwa hones with a layer of tape on the spines. I push them with my fingers. It is an annoying finger cramping process. That might be the reason I have only honed 2 of the 7 Wilkinson blades so far. I am waiting for the next time I am in a masochistic mood to try another one. That does not happen very often so it may be a while before they are all done.
