Thanked: 0Custom restoration by Max
Sent this off to Max for full regrind and restore:
And got this back:
I left the restore up to him to handle at his discretion. Obviously, I couldn't be happier. Really a snazzy razor that shaves like a dream.
**- I had a couple of questions about honing as I'm new to honing my razors. Max had me call him and he spent 45 minutes on the phone giving me tips, sending me links, and helping me with honing. He also gave me a brief honing tutorial while we spoke. He offered further advice if/when the time comes. What a gentleman and a true steward if this art. He didn't have to do this, but he did so. I am grateful for the time and tips he shared with me. Thanks to Max for his superb restoration and for taking the time to pass along his immense knowledge to a newbie. Really quite an excellent overall experience.

That looks fantastic! Max's willingness to help new members, as well as so many other members here do, is what truly makes SRP such a special forum. Hope you get to enjoy the razor for years to come.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Thanked: 0Hirlau- I don't doubt it for a second. Just go take 5 minutes on Max's site and look around. Whether you have ever seen/held/used a straight or not, that site just makes you want one. His razors, both restorations and custom builds, are works of art. I have zero doubt this is only my "first" Max restoration. Add this to his willingness to help others and superb customer service(I failed to mention the USPS had momentarily "lost" my restored razor on the trip back. It was to be delivered on Friday 9/5 and imagine my horror when it had not arrived by Monday 9/8. The USPS tracking only showed "Left USPS-Las Vegas" Nothing else. Max took the time to work it out with the USPS and the razor safely arrived on Tuesday 9/9. Thank Goodness.)
When you add all that up, it equals a return customer- no doubt.
Hirlau- as far as hones, well you already know my desire to improve my honing skills. With that comes HAD, which I somewhat already have. Although,my plan is to do my best to try to ease into this craft and really learn the stones which I've acquired and not start switching around and buying new stones every 2 weeks. My current aresenal will have to suffice for now as I do my best to learn, educate myself, practice, and understand the stones I'm currently using. Then once I have a good baseline for honing and know a little bit about what I'm doing, perhaps I'll venture out to different, more exotic stones. (Who am I kidding, of course I'll do this, but I do want to wait as long as I possibly can- Paypal Credit balance has got to be reduced ) As this is my second attempt at all of this, let me say the first time was a disaster. I jumped in to early and didn't really understand wet shaving, my facial features, how to properly shave with a DE or much less a straight, and under no circumstances did I understand honing. As expected, went down in flames and now a year later, I have a greater understanding of how to shave, what works, what doesn't, and what a good shave feels like. Having that knowledge is making this time much better. So no doubt the HAD will certainly kick in, I just hope it can hold off a little while. Even Max discussed with me the need to learn whatever honing setup I might have and not switch around too quickly.
Thanks again for all the great comments- I shaved this morning with the same setup as my SOTD entry and it was every bit as good as the first shave. Max put an incredible edge on the Joseph Allen Non XLL. It really does shave with perfection and makes the shave effortless- Of course I want to learn how to do that as well, who wouldn't? Thanks again everyone, I'll try to post more frequently as I'm also a member of a couple other forums, but this being the only straight razor only forum.
Cheers,
Dan
