    Default Jonathan Crookes

I just got this one in the mail today from the bay. A nice Jonathan Crookes but one little drawback which I can fix but would take a chance at breaking the scales. The blade protrudes just a hair past the scales but I didn't show that. I guess if I break the scale, I could make a new set from bone. They do have some grain to them like they might be ivory except it does have collars. I might just leave it alone.

I see what you mean with the grain but don't understand the scale issue. Do you mean that the razor come through the bottom? Taking them apart would give you the chance to stabilize the crack too. There are a coupe of guys here that are very good with ivory. Sharpton did a tutorial thread not that long ago, it was pretty in depth and informative. PM me if you want me to help you find it.

Yeah, it sticks throughout the bottom of the scales a hair, just noticeable. Sure you can find the thread, I'd love to see it. I don't think it would be that hard to fix. I'm not 100% positive they are ivory but I noticed that they do have some grain to them kinda like ivory does.

Nice find. One thing you can try to raise the razor up some is thin the wedge. It will make the razor sit higher, but from the second photo might not be enough. Hard to tell if the scales are ivory or not from the photos, but I have a set of ivory scales that has that same grain pattern and I don't see any pores common with bone. If you leave it as is just becareful not to slice your hand up. I have done that with a few that stuck out and didn't notice it till to late.

I see the blade out the bottom. Are they warped wide ? Zak pinned some ivory in my shop once. He was doing it and I was sweating bullets :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I thought they were. I can usually tell by looking at them. They have a grain & look different from bone. Cool, I have quite a few razors with ivory scales. They are thin like ivory!
