    Default A lotta metal for a frameback! 8/8 W&B.

Life for me lately has entailed having needles stuck into my face 4 out of 7 days this week. It's gotten in the way of productivity, fun, and just general everything. Kids, listen to Uncle Zak. Don't wait 30 years before going to the dentist. You won't be as lucky as me!

I've only got one more root canal to enjoy before I'm done for a little bit, so I figured tonight was the time to test out a bit of kit I got some time ago -- the new Petzvel lens.

It's a modern recreation of a 19th century camera lens. You change the aperture by slotting in those little plates (which means you can have cute, shaped bokeh if that's your idea of fun). Focus is done with the knob on the side. Shockingly, it works amazingly well on my fancy-ass modern mirrorless camera (though I needed an adapter).

All this to take some pictures of this little fella.

It's a mostly 8/8 Wade & Butcher frameback. Those are the standard FBU scales it's sitting in.

Most likely made around 1850-1860. It's heavy for a frameback. Took a great edge, too!

Here's an artsy-focus picture of it and my John Barber 'Particularly Made for Barber's Use' razor. They're quite a pair!

All I can say is, "WOW" to the frameback...and "EEEEK" to the dentist...root canals are not fun by any means!

    Great pics BTW!

The lens is long enough that it got in the way of taking more detailed pictures. I'll need a bigger light-tent to use that sucker! Kind of appropriate for the razor...

Luckily, the first root canal was no big deal at all, and it looks like #2 isn't gonna be bad either -- these happened before anything bad happened to the nerve, but the tooth just didn't provide enough cover for'em.

It cracks me up that they still use gutta percha to fill the teeth! Wish I could find a source on the glue. It'd be handy to be able to glue old vulcanite scales.

Nice lens, nice razor and you are not the only one getting some catch up dental work. I bet your dentist is close by though.

Just looked up gutta percha for the hell of it since I woke up to early by far. Malaysian tree product. Referred to as a rubber compound used in treating root canals. One source said aspirin has more side effects than gutta percha. I would think dental supply houses could supply, or ding your dentist for some. Tell him why you want it and maybe get a convert to straight razor shaving.

I love that petzval lens, wouldn't mind having that on my 8x10 Kodak bellows camera. I need to get back into shooting wet plate coloidian. Recently, frame backs have become my razors of choice and those are beuts.
