I tried to jump on one of the medivac flights for emergency leave to California back in 2009. I left Andrews AFB in Maryland and then spent 3 days on a C130 as we got diverted all over the country. Finally ended up at McCord AFB in Washington where the pilot got into a pissing match with the ground crew and they refused to let us take off again. It was about midnight and they just opened up the doors on the tarmac and said, "goodbye". Had to walk a few miles to housing, then rent a car and drive 600 miles to California. Those free flights sound great in theory. Nothing like 3 days on a flight with no heat and sitting in a jump seat to make commercial travel sound real appealing.
