Confession of a bottom feeding Bay dweller
With both pockets shallow and one with holes in it, when I do get the Ebay rash, I look for what might for a lot of good reasons, be overlooked. It is risky and of course, I have been burned. I'm not sure anyone needs to know this stuff but here it goes anyway, wait, I take that back, don't do this but maybe there is something to learn that is not a hard lesson. Recently I sniped a "Superb Group of Three Antique Ivory Beige Colored Celluloid Straight Razors." This was the first flag for the bottom feeder......the seller really did not know what they were selling.....many tip offs.....the description is overblown, they had no more straights in their store, they took photos (these are pretty good, sometimes bad photos are your friends), photos of full blade one side only, and no width given for the blades (guessing 5/8ths) Also some blob on one pin and crap replacement scales on the Swede. Price with shipping was $64.50. I figure is even one out of the three can be honed and give a decent shave I'll consider myself 'winning' this auction. Now the wait until this Tuesday to open the treasure chest. Wish me luck!

Thanked: 3226Personally I think you did very well to score those. I have 2 bets for you too. I will bet the Griffon will turn out to be 6/8 and that those crap replacement scales on the Swede turn out to be ivory. Hope I am right. I think they will hone up just fine too.

Thanked: 4827I use very similar shopping techniques. That is a nice score for sure. The Swede looks NOS with ivory and if the flip side is as good, jackpot. I have quite a few that I was the only bidder on and got them for opening price. You have done well this time. The Griffon and the other one I expect to be quite nice too.

I think you've already got your answer, but +1 to ivory scales on the Swede.

Big surprise.....razors were tracked to arrive Tuesday and they arrived today. It does not look like any of the three have seen a hone. Bob H....5/8th on the Griffon. (I wish you had been right) The cover tang razor is also 5/8ths and is from Liana Razor Works. I guess if something looks like a duck and quacks like a duck....well the Swede is pinned like ivory, looks the same on both sides and is the most uncomfortable razor I have ever held...not that I have held more than a few razors...the tang is very small....and combined with being a frameback and the light weight of the razor....I expect blood. Possibly the thumb notch will help with the stability.

Thanked: 480They are ivory indeed. Don't know why they would be uncomfortable though. Do you have big hands? And I apologize for making you pay as much as you did, and glad I didn't make you pay more.
